MRE's vs. Canned

Nutritional value degrades over time

A point I haven't seen talked about is that taste isn't the only factor for the long term storage of survival food. Another important thing to keep in mind, is that over time, your food will lose its nutrtional value. When it comes to eating food in a survival situation, nutrtional content and calories, clearly play a more important role. Some of the factors that help kep food are minimizing its exposure to oxygen, that is why many of the freeze dried cans are nitrogen sealed. Also temperature. Heat will quickly act to break down your food. This is why pantries are generally situated in cool parts of the home.

The # 10 cans of Mountain House are very tasty and are said to last up to 30 years, but are expensive as well. The walton feed company has a big selection of important staples like beans, wheat, rice, salt, sugar etc.

Good points.

I remember a while ago, that Natick Labs ran some tests on 15-25 year old MRE's that were stored for testing purposes. They found that while the color of the food had changed, and more than half the nutritional value of the foods were gone, they were still safe to eat. Interesting, but that would also mean that you would have to have 2 MRE's to get the same nutritional value.

That's why us folks who store food, not only keep a verity of things. From staples, to canned meats, veggies, and fruits, but we also have a rotational plan in place so that things (other than LTS foods) are rotated out at a regular basis!
