Alright folks I'm finally getting the hell out of this state. I talked my girl friend into moving. She refused NH <-- my home land, but okayed RI.

I am going to be moving buy the end of the month and was wondering what I to look forward to both good and bad.

A few ?'s I have are

do I need to have a permit to but a gun like here.
do I need to notify anyone when I move.
Can I buy guns like H & K's and new glocks?

thanks for any info

If I"m not mistaken, RI is worse than Mass for gun owners. I've heard that permits are nearly non existant. Hope I'm wrong.

BTW, RI is probably the most politically corrupt state there is, even more so than Mass.

I think RI would be on my move to list at about number 50.

I tried getting a non resident carry permit for RI. They sent me a package that had all kinds of deliverables, including a letter stating my need for the permit. They received my package, which I send overnight w/ signature required, and promptly lost it. After I didn't hear anything from them for several months, I found a number and called. They told me they never received the package in which I gave them the tracking number. I actually received a call back stating they were sorry, but it seemed they lost the package and to please resend it. I did that feeling I had a better shot seeing they had messed up the first time.

That was a wasted hope in that 3 months later I received a letter from RI stating only:

"Request Denied. Insufficient Need"

That was it, no explanation, no signature, no nothing. Just that. Good luck if you move down there. You should try talking your girlfriend into moving to Vermont.

poor Hammy [crying] Out of the frying pan and into the fire...

If she's willing to do RI, then just keep going a few more miles to CT. I hear it's a touch better there.

Oh- and when moving you have to notify your current local PD and the Firearms Licensing Bureau, and then find out what the laws are for bringing firearms into the state for RI to find out who you have to notify there.

Send your notification registered with return receipt so that way when they say you never told them you have proof that you did.

[rofl] [laugh2] [rofl]

It'll take a bit to get your CT Permit to Carry, but it's pretty easy. To answer your question about H&Ks and Glocks...CT is loaded with them!

alright

well, I still hate MA. I have only a class B<-- which I was suckered into, because I came from NH and was told that it was pretty much the same thing...yeah right.

I don't carry anyway. My own choice never did even when I could up in NH.

So I don't want the conversation to go down the wrong road. I was just looking for info as far as what I do when I move. What I can buy. and any other laws that I should be aware of.

Thanks

IMO if she won't move to NH, she's worthy of dumpage. I don't see
whats so alluring about RI, unless you guys are going to afford a newport
mansion or something.

IMO going to RI, is trading one kind of bad for another. It's not going
to improve for you gun wise, down there, unless you're only a recreational
shooter.

Ouch, now every time you fill out an LTC application you will have to check the yes box next to the "have you ever been denied a LTC before?" question.
I don't think they offer an area for you to explain either!

Sorry to hear that you are moving here to RI. What we lack in size, we make up for in coruption and stupidity.

Good news: you can buy any gun you want. Just need a green card in which you have to take an easy test to pass ( 20 questions?)

Bad news:
-no class 3
-Permits are tough. AG requires showing of need. However, Police Chiefs SHALL issue but most refuse. Some will issue depending on what town. CRAL has sued one Chief and won and is in the process of suing others which we hope will open the state up to Shall Issue (which is the law.)

If Bill Harsh gets elected AG, our probs will be over for 4 years (good chance)

www.cralri.com is your best bet for info

As regards Rhode Island, think of it as Mass. without the facade of independent review for appeal of denials and the wonderful "one uniform system" for licensing criteria - the AG's successful usurpation of each chief's authority.

WHY would you move there absent a compelling reason to do so?

Because you don't need to ask permission to buy a gun, you don't need to register your guns, and you don't need to buy guns that are on some mythical list that changes more than my girlfriend's mind. NH is better, but if you don't carry, RI is better than MA.

THAT right there is what has kept me for trying to go for some non-res RI permit that people talk about.

And I can't stand RI drivers, car insurance sucks from what I've been told...way more expensive because it's not mandatory. So you have to pay for all the people that drive without it...

But, they have a bunch of Tattoo shops...so you can ink up.

Oh, and if you ride, no helmet law....so you can ride without one if you so choose...

Mass. residents do not "need to ask permission to buy a gun." I don't know where you got that drivel from, but this is NOT New York - yet. The list changes to ADD new guns, after GCAB approval.

Note that every "benefit" you claim for RI is true for NH. With all the additional benefits NH offers, what does RI - or your girlfriend - have to compensate?

Dunno why he wants to go to RI. But I can tell you why my wife would prefer RI over NH: Warmer. Better beaches. Narragansett Bay. I've got a chance of convincing my wife to retire to RI. Very little chance of convincing my wife to retire to NH.

Yeah that part definitely sucks. I have permits for all of New England with the exception of RI. (Granted VT doesn't need a permit) I sent copies of my other permits and all the other required information along with the letter. I even discussed bullet points for the letter with guys in the "know" from my local club. Hell, I'm even a Reserve Deputy Sherrif and I sent them copies of that as well. (OK, lets not go into that one. I know how some of you feel about it) I thought I had a great shot at getting approved.

I'm not sure who you need to know or who you need to sleep with to get a permit down there, but you must need some kind of angle to get one.

As to the the original post the only thing I can say is Good Luck!
