Moving to NH

[laugh2]
Don't come to Maine it sucks really bad. The food is aweful, the pay is nothing, the jobs all suck, the housing is old and smelly, the ground sucks for raising crops, the rivers don't have any real fish in thm, the gun laws suck, housing and groceries are high, the hospitals and schools are staffed by idiots, the taxes are really high, the state house is run by dems, the roads are full of pot holes, the electric only works sometimes, the deer all died 4 winters ago, the small game all got et by the coydogs, the trees stopped running sap during the depression, the ocean and lakes are frozen solid 60% of the time, the beaches are rocky, when the ocean is not frozen the temp is only 52, the winters are long, hard, and did I say long, none of the roads ever get plowed either, did I mention the winters are long and there is a lot of snow to shovel, the gun stores are all run by thieves, the cars all need a paint job, the stores sell cloths 5 years out of fashion, the malls are small, the police are corrupt, the politcians are all on the take, the mafia owns all the pizza places and the pizza all sucks, the women are ugly, chain smoke, are fat and are ex-convicts, did I mention the winters are long and very very cold and finally it just is not place for a real man to live.

Stay in MA or move to NH. If I could and when I get out of jail, that is where I am moving.

The parts that don't apply to New England in general are mostly false.

They had their choice between a rich gun-grabbing liberal who would give us national healthcare and more foreign wars... or Obama.
The upcoming vote on the stand your ground law I think will tell alot about the direction of the state on future issues.

Update: I think we settled on the town of Ossipee. Schools seem good, taxes good. Any input on the town or the area? Thanks

pretty much sums it up. The superpacs swiftboated Ovide, and Guinta was no prize... a lot of republicans just stayed home.

I live in Sunapee, close to mountains, skiing, fishing, hunting, several ranges nearby, low property taxes compared to most of the state
thanks to al the vacation homes, pretty conservative area except for the old people who retired here from NY,CT,MA,RI etc. Local PD cleared my CC permit in 48 hours. Had my paper in four days. Relatively close to most of what you would be looking for but not in the middle of nowhere.
I moved here from GA in 1999 after hiking the AT. Shocked by the property taxes. less than $1k for a 2500sf house on 2 acres just north of Atlanta, same house in Lebanon, NH would be about $9K in taxes today. Sunapee it's around $3k per year. And two liquor stores within 5 miles.
that's just a bonus also 3 GUN shops within 4 miles of my front door if that tells you anything and Ruger is 4 miles away also. Damn! If I didn't already live here I think I would have to move here. I am a high school teacher with an NRA sticker on my car. Yes it is the ONLY one in the staff parking section! I make a point to park next to the commie with all the O'bummer stickers. Starts my day with a smile. Of course our new Governor is however a $hithead. Counting revenues for a casino that is not even permitted yet. Brilliant indeed. All in all a pretty chill place to live. Very low crime decent employment, riff raff is at least a town or two away, plenty of gun nuts like us nearby.

I spent 25 years in Maine, moved to Central NY for 4 years (only partly by choice - long story there, boils down to "the least worst option"), then moved to NH about 14 months ago.

While Maine was my first choice, I have to say NH is very much growing on me. I live the the Concord area and it has a lot to offer. The GF was here for a 4 day stint (She splits her time between ChicagoLand and So. NJ these days, work related) and also seems to like it here, not to mention she saw a number of properties advertised that where much to her (and in a couple of cases my) liking.

Assuming I can move from contract to direct at my current job (or move to a direct hire job in my field) it's looking more and more like I will be relocating here for good within the next few years, she will be selling her place in NJ, and we will be buying a place and getting married (shudder) to spend the rest of our lives in marital, um, bliss - I guess - here.

I told her I will do whatever she wants with the rest of the house, but I want the following: My own bedroom, a "Lair" (the term "Mancave" just sounds stupid) she is welcome in as long as she keeps her mouth shut about what I do with it, and the garage/barn (prefer a barn...).

As far as I am concerned an apartment for me above the barn is ideal, but I doubt we would be able to find - or afford - something like that. I have grown very fond of my bachelor ways living by myself lo these many years though and am loth to have to deal with 27 bottles of hair stuff in the shower and constant complaints about the dam toilet seat and where what spoon goes in the drawer.

I like a more rural setting (read: can't see or hear the neighbors) and would like to have a range and room to shoot fireworks, she likes the (relitive) proximity to shopping, health care providers and the lack of income tax. I tried to clue her on the property tax issues, but I don't think she really "gets" it yet. She is more of a "city/suburban" kinda gal, so we will have to find some kind of compromise that way (I would live 2 miles up a dirt road, her, not so much...) but it seems doable from what I have seen. Plenty of options for RE choices from living "In Town" to "Out in the Boonies" and still be able to get to work in a reasonable time.

Kinda looking forward to finding a permanent home, place to settle into and stay. Not really in the cards ATM, but I am hoping it's here.
