I have never absorbed all the strange gun laws here... was thinking it would be a good home defense weapon with an under barrel laser/flashlight mount...

Legalities aside, you're going to have about a 30% less effective shotgun in terms of speed and accuracy with a pistol-grip shotgun versus say a regular Mossberg 500 or 590 or 930:

This. A standard 500 with an 18.5 inch cylinder bore barrel is much more effective fire arm than a pistol grip gun.
