Back in the 80's before I got married, the day I paid my pick up off, Barb got into an accident with it! I bring that up now and then and oh does it zing her!.

the letter I got from the bank (with the signed title) told me to bring it to the RMV and they'd issue me a new clear title. Funny, but I don't remember doing that for my Taurus and Sable when they were paid off.

Then again, I had to fight with the bank over the Taurus' title... kept telling me that they didn't have it and they'd lost it... and then they sent it to me a month or so later. No apology or "oops".

Ah yes...<slaps forehead>. Having a roof over the head and food in the tummy does tend to take prioirty. Well...MOST of the time anyway.
