I was trolling the 7.62x54R.net web site, and I began to wonder how many of the varieties Mosin-Nagant posted there belonged to NES members. I also thought that this would be a thread that most of NES MilSurp-ers could participate in, and a great educational opportunity.

Rules:

1. Any Mosin-Nagant rifle; M91, M91/30, Dragoons, Cossacks, M07, M27, M38 M38, M91/59, Finn, Finned, P series, etc, etc, and etc.
2. Unlimited entries as long as they are different - Fred rule
3. Up to four pictures per entry with brief information; cost, significance, rarity, etc.
4. Entries end Valentine's Day
6. Chit chat/comments/reps allowed - this is supposed to be fun - we all like to show off

Our previous record in the monthly entries was the first one - pistols - with 28 entries. I think we can double that. Personally, I'd like to see a comparison of Dragoon versus a Cossack. I would also make space in my cabinet for one other Mosin-Nagant - a Polish M91/25/38 8mm conversion.

Let's go!

T.

Well, here's my one Mosin-Nagant. I only have one pic at the moment; my computer got a virus and I lost a year's worth of pics on the drive except what was saved on Photobucket.

This is a Russian contract M91 New England Westinghouse originally made at the Hill Plant in Chicopee Falls, MA, (which later became Savage Arms) probably in early 1916 (serial 651663 of 1.5 million), but all Westinghouses bear the date of the contract, 1915. This rifle was one that was shipped to Russia before the Revolution of 1917 when Russia defaulted on their contract without paying a Ruble to Westinghouse or Remington, nearly bankrupting both firms.

At some point the Finns got their hands on it after WWI and restocked it with a beautiful interwar or WWII 3-finger stock, and this M91 was probably used against Russia in the Winter War and the Continuation War. The bolt is still matching, although it bears Izhevsk proofs. The floor plate and butt plate are not matching. There is some graffiti on the left side of the receiver that no one has been able to figure out.The bore was terrible, but eventually cleaned up to a fair with some pitting and counter-bored a 1/2 inch. I replaced the single stage Remington trigger with a Finn modified two-stage Chatellerault trigger and trigger spring through the retaining pin. It's not a true two stage trigger, but at least you have a clue before it goes 'bang'. I also had to add a M91 style cleaning rod, nose cap screw, and found a WWI style SA marked Finn sling for it.

What's neat about this rifle is that it was in the condition the Finns left it in when surplussed out of service; there are three copper shims in the stock which are perfectly matched to mate this particular action into this particular stock. It is so perfectly dialed in that my very first shot at 50 yards I actually hit the "X" itself; I've never done that with any other surplus rifle. There is a faint CAI import mark under the barrel. The three times I have shot it, it prefers a diet of light ball ammunition.

7.62x54R.net gives the M91 Westinghouse a rarity of "5", and in Finned condition a "5" as well. I assume a pair of 5's on the same rifle for rarity are worth more than a single 5. (?)

I had a matching 1939 Izhevsk M91/30 with a so-so bore several years back, but it didn't thrill me. I wanted one with a bit more history and character, and this one fit the bill; I bought it for $250 with another $100 for parts.

Managed to retrieve three more from my digital records of my firearms and put them on the 'bucket.

New made? Yugo capture? Not sure what you mean?

T

It would be a Yugoslavian refurbished Russian PU sniper. The Yugo-manufactured stock is made from elm, and usually stamped with a BP 124 in a triangle. Many were never fitted with a base, mount and scope.

That's a nice one.

Many to choose from in the collection, but not a difficult decision. Last year, I found the oldest surviving original matching and early featured Mosin Nagant found outside of armory museums in Russia, an 1898 Tula Model of 1891, that amazingly escaped any refurbishments or upgrades. Complete with all the parts that left the factory, 116 years ago.

Four pics or a long winded description can't capture it. So I'll post one pic, and a link to the Showcase presentation on Russian-Mosin-Nagant-Forum. Enjoy.

I'll throw my M38 in the mix. It was my first milsurp and ran me about $250 IIRC including the sling you see. Numbers match and there's a counterbore, but it shoots great. Bore was in nice shape as is all the metal as you can see in the pics. Its in an M44 stock which a previous owner refinished, but I think it looks fantastic this way. I had to have it as soon as I saw it.

I'll try again. New rifle unissued sent to Yugoslavia in the late 40s went directly into storage. Not refurbished anything. If you like I can hook you up with the man who bought a case of them around '03 or '04 and sent me this one. Martin would know him as Marcus.

I'll take some pictures of mine this week but I saw this picture this morning and thought it was interesting.

I wonder if those rifles are now sitting in someone's safe?

Wow, that stock looks really good compared to most 53's I've seen! Did you refinish it?

Nope , some of the finish has worn off on the upper hand gaurd . And there's a penny size chip on the right hand side near the trigger.
I used car wash simple green hot water to clean the wood.
Debated refinishing it but cause if the chip figure leave as Is for history .

Pilgrim,

What are your receiver dates?

T.

I like the grip on the M39, reminds me of a Mauser or a M03 Semi-C stock.

Correction to above:
Just crawled into my stash and here's the poop.

M44 is Isky date 1944

M38 is Isky date 1940

M39 is a Sako date 1942

The 91/30 is a Tula date 1943

Second entry: Polish wz.91/98/25

This rarely found model was converted from Russian 7.62X54r to German 7.92X57mm by Poland during the mid-1920's. It sports features from both the Mosin Nagant M91 and the Mauser K98. The major changes are the Polish constructed 8mm stepped barrel, receiver machined to place the stripper clip guides rearward, altered magazine to feed the wider neck of the 8mm round, reduced diameter bolt face for the rimless cartridge, flattened rear sight leaf, and addition of Mauser bayonet lug and sling swivels to the stock.

Much more in depth coverage of the purpose and features of the model can be found here. Lots of reading, if you are interested.

Got my first Mosin earlier this month, a M91/30, was a Grade B $99 one, got a clean Molot (no cosmoline).
Nice stock with only minor scuffs, 1943 Izhevsk with DDR /1\ Mark, not counterbored, matching bolt, receiver, buttplate.
It shoots great... nice tight groups.

First time on the forum in a while. Between gun shows and a week in bed with the flu I missed this thread. I post some of my collection like my M28 variants, Yugo M44, SKY M39. Back to bed, feel like a bus hit me
