I was wondering if you guys think it would be possible to find a mentor. I would like to learn more about guns, but can't afford to spend much money on it. Does it seem reasonable to believe that someone would be nice enough to teach me what they know? I am an agreeable fellow and eager to learn just don't really have the connections to have someone that I could ask.
I have thought about just going to one of the local gun stores and hanging around trying to glean whatever information that I can, but I doubt that would really benefit their business since I would not be able to spend much money and I wouldn't want to get on their nerves. I am planning on joining the Lee sportsmens next month and was figuring that might be a good avenue to find someone that might be willing to teach me. Right now I only have a pistol, but I am planning on buying a Ruger 10/22 after the first of the year and then hopefully more guns after that as money will allow. I am pretty sure it will be quite a while before I get any more after that as I do not see myself with expendable income anytime in the next 400 years thanks to student loan payments.
My interests are varied but I would like to try IDPA, skeet or trap, and in the real long run three gun competition. I have a 9 now and plan on getting a 22, but if I were to go beyond those two calibers I would be interested in learning to reload. I apologize if I have come off as a dumb ass or wasted anyones time in causing you to read this, but I figured that I might be able to tap into the wealth of knowledge that is Northeast Shooters to help me learn outside of the cyber world.

Why not? There is a lot of knowledge and knowledgeable people on this forum. Just ask, listen, and go from there, try to go to the member's only shoots and meet ups, etc. Mentoring just happens.

The people I've met off the board are awesome, when you meet some you will find the same. Sounds like you have a good start, pistol and then a rifle. The .22 is a great, cheap platform for the basics. GL

As Dave just described, NESers are always there to answer any questions you might have. If you become a member, you can sign up for member only shoots and meet a lot of great people. It also gives you the chance to test out new guns (which most members are happy to let you fire as long as you ask and bring along ammo for it) which allows you to save money in the long run by being able to try everything before spending any money. If you have any questions just let me know and if I don't know I can at least point you in the right direction.

There are a few members on here from your part of MA... check the "What club do you belong to?" thread, and look for some locals... contact them and arrange some range time.
