BOSTON — The city saw its 34th homicide of the year this weekend, and two other people were wounded in South End shootings, including a 12-year-old boy, in continuing gun-related violence.

At 10:17 p.m. Saturday, Boston police found an unidentified man shot several times at Levant and Tebroc streets in Dorchester. He was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center, police said.

Two hours later, the 12-year-old and a 24-year-old man, both shot at a Store 24 on Massachusetts Avenue in the South End, were carried by a group of people to Boston Medical Center and treated for non-fatal injuries, according to police.

Last year’s homicide total marked a 10-year high, and this year’s count is on pace to exceed that. According to numbers from Boston police, 34 people have been killed so far this year, compared to 27 at this time in 2005. No one under the age of 18 has been murdered in 2006. Six people under 18 were killed in 2005, police said.

Gun-related fatalities have also risen, with 23 firearm homicides this year versus 14 last year during the same period, while the number of non-fatal shootings spiked from 91 to 169, according to police data collected from Jan. 1 to June 19.

Boston police have reported success with their new gun buyback program, which has brought 382 guns off the streets since June 12 as people anonymously exchange firearms for $200 Target gift cards.

But a group of City Councillors have expressed concern about the program’s effectiveness, noting that the gift cards can be used as payment for newer, more powerful weapons.

Facts

• Thirty-four people have been killed in Boston so far this year, compared to 27 over the same period in 2005.

• No one under the age of 18 has been killed this year, compared with six people last year.

382 * $200 = $76,400

That's the salary of a police officer, or some good overtime pay to track down the murderers.

Instead, the Mayor insists on paying off people for turning in their junk so he can show a large table of scarey guns on TV.

What's worse is that the majority of people in Boston are so freaking mindless that they accept this as a 'success' and keep voting this idiot back into office.

*sigh*

Maybe Rebecca Peters can tell the criminals murder is not a sport and they'll stop killing citizens.
