I enjoy this weekend. I like it because of what it is for. To me when someone is stuck in a hole with bombs falling on their head they wish they were home doing something else, I go out of my way to go out and have fun. So yesterday was the drag races today was the boat and haven’t come up with tomorrow but it will be something

I visited Omaha Beach a couple years ago. It was truly a sobering experience. Then to visit the cemetery adjacent to Omaha Beach and see the thousands of graves was even more sobering. Perhaps because I lost a lot of friends in Vietnam I view Memorial Day in a more somber way than the OP.

I dunno.......somehow I find your comment bordering on being cavalier. Obviously you've never been in combat and have never lost someone who'd give their life for you. I somehow envy your view although it's 180 degrees out from mine.

Memorial Day is for remembering those who gave everything so you can go to the drag races and take your boat for a spin. Save the partying for 7/4. IMHO.

Armed Forces Day- third Saturday in May- to honor those currently serving.
Veterans Day- November 11th- to honor those who served.
Memorial Day- last Monday in May- to honor those who gave their lives serving.

Go ahead and enjoy the weekend, but remember to say a prayer for those brave souls who gave their lives, and don't say "Happy" Memorial Day. For those who were left to mourn, it's not a happy day.

RIP Sgt Brian St. Germain USMC, KIA 4 April 2006, OIF. Son of a friend.

58,000 Dog Tags to Commemorate American Soldiers Killed in the Vietnam War - Scoopy Web

    58K2.jpg

A new art installation at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, called “Above and Beyond,” features over 58,000 replica dog tags — one for each American soldier killed in the Vietnam War.

The dog tags, each hung one inch apart, are suspended from the ceiling from a 410-square-foot rectangle. Each dog tag has the soldier’s name, military branch and date of death. Nearby is a touch panel display that allows visitors to look up a veteran's name and find generally where the soldier's dog tag is hanging. It is the only memorial other than The Wall in Washington, D.C., that lists every individual killed in Vietnam.

It's a damn shame that so many equate Memorial Day as the kick off of summer.
For those who need a reminder of this somber day, here's just a few

So I’m a dick by giving a conscious thought and celebrate all their sacrifice by enjoying everything their deaths gave. I have no respect for any of you

^ My parents are at the National Cemetery in Bourne. I physically can't make the drive yet. I'll be there for Veteran's Day.

Will try to go to the diner for breakfast. Will hit some cemeteries of friends and family. Two of which made it home physically only to leave us due to mental/family issues being home.

I know there are a lot of deceased relatives here from one-stripe to General, decorated with MOH to service-campaign-ribbon-only, and everything in between that we miss. Honor them this day how you see fit.

    Just. Honor. Them. [halfmast]

The moving wall has been at the NH Veterans Cemetery a few times and I have visited it when it's there. It's an overwhelming experience and very emotional for me. I am planning on taking a few photos tomorrow while I am there. There are over 10,000 veterans and their spouses laid to rest there with a flag at each stone. I am pretty sure I won't be walking back home with dry eyes.

My family includes former USAAF, USAF, and an outstanding Army Ranger, Thankfully none died while serving, but they were willing to. Every day.

This morning I'll be visiting all the cemeteries in town that have veterans buried in them along with members of the Legion and the VFW who lay a wreath, say a prayer, fire a three-gun volley, and play taps.
Not sure if I'll march in the town parade or not.
Specifically, I'll be remembering these men today:
    Cpl. John R. Stalvey
    LCpl Ryan J. Sorensen
    LCpl Daniel F. Swaim
    LCpl Steven L. Phillips
    Cpl. Rusty L. Washam
    LCpl Matthew R. Barnes
    Capt Todd Seibert
    Capt Phillip Dykeman

This morning, I'll visit the Moving Wall. My stepdaughter is in the Pelham High band, they always do a small parade from the village green where the wall is, Down the street to the cemetery where they do a very nice ceremony. This year should be extra special with the wall.

    RIP SSgt Joseph Bellevia

And while he died an old man, RIP to the one heavily on my mind today, my grandfather, Robert J Walsh Sr, who joined the Navy at 15 and was on the Underwater Demolition team in WWII

Thank You to all the Veterans. Today I will spend it with 2 Veterans, my father in-law and my good friend Larry. We will be just sitting on the deck listening to music, drinking beer and watching the kids go in the pool. Damn that water is cold.

Rest in peace to all who could not enjoy today. Let us not forget.

Kind of figured that out a while ago, but appreciate you putting it out there so clearly.

Scott, you did nothing wrong, I mean that. Memorial Day threads on the internet go wrong almost every year. It’s the nature of the beast. I’m wrenching on an engine today, but my soul is in prayer for those that gave it all. God Bless
