Mauser hunting rifle ("sporter"? "scout"

Hi. Just wondering if anyone here hunts with a "98" Mauser in 8mm.

If so, have you done anything to change the original configuration, like shortened the barrel and/or stock or changed the sight(s)?

What kind of ammo do you use?

What is actually meant by the term "sporter" anyhow? What about "scout" rifle?

I'm planning a scout build of a M48 Mauser that I picked up NIB for $100. Not a perfect choice for a scout but all things considered it fits Jeff Cooper's definition. I found this site:
