3D gun printing is illegal under Massachusetts laws, Attorney General Maura Healey and Gov. Charlie Baker's top public safety official say.
Healey's office, along with Baker's Executive Office of Public Safety led by former prosecutor Daniel Bennett, issued a notice saying anybody seeking to create, transfer or possess a weapon made with a 3D printer can run afoul of criminal and civil laws in Massachusetts.
A weapon in Massachusetts is defined as "any rifle, shotgun or firearm."
The notice comes after a temporary federal court order blocked the Trump administration from allowing the publication of plans for 3D-printed weapons. In a reversal, a settlement allowed Defense Distributed, a nonprofit defense firm headquartered in Texas, to post online files covering the printing of 3D firearms.
"Weapons made exclusively from plastic or that otherwise cannot be detected by an x- ray machine or walk-through metal detector are unlawful, as are 'covert weapons,' weapons designed to look like something other than a gun (e.g., a key chain, pen, or cigarette lighter)," the Massachusetts notice says. "They cannot be sold, transferred, or possessed."
