Matt Damon: "The problem is civil obedience"

People really show up to an event where Matt Damon reads Howard Zinn off of a crumpled piece of paper?

who Matt Damon or Howard Zinn the self proclaimed anarchist socialist?

Go read some of the stuff about Howard Zinn.

Seems there's a lot of people on the left who mouth the ideals of liberty - but when push comes to shove they can't seem to get away from the socialism - so in the end they're just supporting tyranny.

They just can't bring themselves to truly support "the people" - that they claim to be supporting.

Zinn, at one point, considered himself a Marxist. More broadly he considered himself a socialist. But he also claims to be an anarchist. Go figure.

They are both worthless. Zinn's material has been fairly refuted in many ways but it is still used in college class rooms like some sort of liberal bible devinely inspired by Marx and Angles. The resistence they advocate is to those advocating freedom. All liberals essential think with, as my mother-in-law puts it, "thier parts" so as long as we get "abortions for some, miniature American flags for others" (Simpsons, Tree House of Terror VII) it's all good no matter what other freedoms are trampled.

Of course that's your contention. You're a first-year grad student; you just got finished reading some Marxian historian, Pete Garrison probably. You're gonna be convinced of that 'till next month when you get to James Lemon. Then you're going to be talking about how the economies of Virginia and Pennsylvania were entrepreneurial and capitalist way back in 1740. That's gonna last until next year; you're gonna be in here regurgitating Gordon Wood, talkin' about, you know, the pre-revolutionary utopia and the capital-forming effects of military mobilization.

There are a few bits of that speech that ring true, very few. Damon is reading this for the publicity, while morons in the audience, applaud.[hmmm]

I never understood these ass clowns. They consider themselves anarchist in that they don't want a societal hierarchy, and capitalism creates a capitalist hierarchy... so socialize stuff? well how is stuff socialized without hierarchy, force is used if people opt-out then even if you don't call it "government".

Anarcho-Capitalism is the only true anarchy, as all transactions are voluntary. Groups can choose to socialize within their own circles in that scenario.

All I heard was "wealth redistribution" and then tuned the rest out. His points about civil disobedience are spot on yet he is after a different goal than I.

yes but you see so many people who have no self control so they call on an entity to do it for them. Like the people who say "The way apple treats it's workers is criminal man. those facist capitolist pigs". Then in their next breath they say "yea I have to pick up the new Iphone 5 today and trade last months model in.". They can't control themselves so they want everyone controlled which is the total opposite of ok.
