Massachusetts Democrat introduces bill to "screen all patients for the presence of firearms in the home"

I have been through this line of questioning already, because my medical provider demands it, now they are insisting that i allow them in my house or they will stop my medical coverage. My NP who is normal and owns firearms told me that this is coming from the state, and supposedly links to the opioid epidemic. i think it's just another ruse to try and find and list gun owners. Also "most" Doctors are anti-gun and i have found this out personally and professionally as a Leo.

no matter what the answer, they will simply mark you as a gun owner and move on

They can't do that. There's plenty of guidance in the medical world in terms of how session notes are written and forms filled out. They can't "answer for you" by inferring.

It's cute that you believe that, but this is not medical information. This would be a required government checkbox, the doctor is no more your ally than the cops in this case unless you are a personal friend. I'm sure some doctors would treat anything other than a yes as a no, but many (Most?) are anti gun to start with and would gladly do whatever they could to cause you trouble for wrongthink.

Nope. Go ask a doctor, nurse, social worker, etc when was the last time they decided to check the opposite box on any patient screening form just because they wanted to. This is patient screening. You may or may not be right about how there's plenty of anti-gun doctors (certainly the professional associations are) but you're dead wrong if you think they're going to start checking the opposite box of a patient's response on a screening form. This is not like a cop exaggerating or lying on a report.

Spent any real time with those people? I have, and things are not like you make them out to be. This is not patient info, this is not part of your medical screening. This is a separate government form them are being forced to fill out. I'm not saying they will check the opposite of what you answer, I am saying that all the answers people come up with to avoid saying yes will be taken as yes. If you say no, I don't think they will try to figure if you are lying, but if you start asking them about their underwear or raving about violations of rights they will take it as a yes.

Doctors are not infallible godlike individuals who follow the rules in all cases and care about your rights. They are people doing a job with plenty of nonsense to deal with every day due to government mandates. Ever been asked if you feel safe at home? I can tell you right now if you answer with things other than yes they don't just go "Well, he didn't say no so we will just move on". The same will happen with this.

Maybe someone should put together a bill to screen for doctors offices having proper firearms training before giving firearms advice.

Why not?

... Doctors ... are people doing a job with plenty of nonsense to deal with every day due to government mandates. ...
We have ENTIRE STATES ignoring government mandates (NJ, CT, NY, VA, ...); so I don't see why the doctors cannot ignore them as well. Sides are being chosen.

That would be great, but for the most part people who the government has power over don't refuse. Doctors start refusing, they might lose their license and not be able to work. Gun shops defy clear bullshit, they lose their state license and go out of business. Cops refuse to enforce because they know a law is unconstitutional, lose their job and pension. It would be nice to expect people to do the right thing and protect the rights of others, but reality is most will not because they care more about themselves than about protecting rights.

Doc: Do you have a gun in your home?
Me: "A Gun?", Doc you do know I'm from NH right? A Gun HaHaHa [rofl] [rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl]

The left is unrelenting in their quest to reform America into a new socialist utopia. Data mining is the key to all this. Seemingly mindless questions have an end in their purpose. We are in"1984" where total control is the goal. We need to learn how to wade through this mess as best as we can and stay under the radar. What's troubling is mandatory questioning/interrogation of ones constitutionally protected rights/beliefs. We are in the era where wrong is right and right is wrong.

There are plenty of Bolshevik doctors and nurses who would gladly forge report information to further what they believe is the 'right thing'. They're people, just like bad cops and bad politicians. Wake up and smell the coffee!

That can work in both directions. Not all have the same idea of "right thing"; some agree with us.

No because it will be the truth... You did have that license and all the guns, but they were lost in that tragic boating accident.

It might be difficult to use that defense if your doctor visit was a month or six ago and you still haven't reported the loss of your firearms as prescribed by state law. You could be facing a couple of years in jail and prohibited person status for life, not to mention being in even more trouble if they ever catch you with those supposedly sunken guns later on.

So if you answer no but you have a gun license and possess state registered firearms will there be a penalty for lying?

Right? It's not like this is new information for the State. They already have a list of gunowners. It's more about correlating that with the medical data so they can make up some bullshit reasons to deny and revoke.

After a recent injury trips to Med Stop and followup to primary, they were relentless in asking about tobacco use. I answered them but after this thread it has gotten me to thinking of all the irrelevant questions medical "professionals" ask. Maybe a strategy could be to thank them for their concerns. Then assertively but politely let them know you are only answering questions pertinent to the situation at hand. Saying you don't feel comfortable answering them as it is invading your RIGHT TO PRIVACY. Stating in this day in age you can't trust how your personal information will be used or hacked with all the data breaches. Always be polite and courteous.

I have a number of friends who are MD’s, including several friends from the gun club. My own primary care physician is a friend and he’s been shooting with me too.

I’ve asked several of them if patients tell them the truth. Emphatically they all said very few patients tell the truth and that’s a big problem in medicine. It’s probably the biggest impediment to solving a medical problem. I remember watching the old TV show House, and Dr. House frequently said, “Everybody lies”. Yup, that’s true.

Docs who are trying to diagnose and treat an ailment need to have all relevant facts to provide their best recommendation and for so many different reasons, including embarrassment, cultural biases and fear, their patients often lie. Frequently lie. To their own detriment.

So now our government wants to introduce legislation that will require MD’s to ask questions that, IMHO, many firearms folks will lie about. The MD’s may be required to ask the questions, but I doubt the legislation requires the patient to tell the truth. And most gun owners I know will not tell the truth. It’s the path of least resistance to disclosing private information.

So this proposed legislation has unintended consequence of further straining the doctor/patient relationship, and more likely that patients will refuse to provide honest answers in a medical situation. It further drives a wedge between an already fragile yet critical relationship. Perhaps even causing some folks to avoid medical treatment. And that’s just wrong.

What’s next??? Will my dentist start asking about firearms in my house? Or perhaps pharmacists at CVS? Perhaps school teachers and administrators? Hell, why not the mailman too? Why the singular focus on guns and not the many other, far more frequent risk factors in life?

:-(

Assuming screening just means questions, then simply answer no, I do not have any firearms.

Because law can mean anything the corrupticians dream up, lying will be a felony. And they'll compare your answers with LTC/FID records, past and present and if they THINK you have one, you'll get the flashbang visit to check.

Then when you left, she checked off “Yes” for that question....

When the nurse reaches the guns, seatbelts and drinking questions I inform her that lifestyle questions aren't clinically relevant and we can skip over them. She's not going answer for me (she can't). They'll all be noted as "declined to answer". What the researchers and paper pushers make of "declined" is another matter.

There is only one way they can do that .
And even liberals will wig out about the government snooping in their medical records.

On a recent visit for a follow up, the technician who does the BP and such asked me all the questions. I was prepared for her, If asked about firearms I was going to ask her if she had a copy of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in her home, Sadly it never came up. DAMN!

So, at Reliant, they have a sign on their door about guns or weapons or something. They also hand you an electronic table to fill in info and hand back to them. I just take it, sit there a while, then hand it back to them at the end with nothing on it when they call my name and say thank you.
