Poignant, moving sculpture based on the photo/film of the event at Iwo Jima.

I wonder why the sculptor gave the Marine an M1 when he wasn't actually carrying one...

In the sculpture, position of the rifle is more prominent, but it's the same rifle for the Marine in the same position as the famous photo. Biggest difference I see is that the Marine at the rear doesn't have a jacket stuffed into the back of his belt.
 
Is that the current 50 star US flag? IMO, the flagon monument should be a replica of 48 star US flag raised on Mt Suribachi.
 
The rocks are all wrong as well. Iwo Jima's Mt Suribachi is a basaltic volcano. Though the coloration of the rocks in the monument is typical of weathered basalt, the jointing is typical of metamorphosed rock fracturing along cleavage planes. I'm disgusted by this abomination!
