A man in Londonderry was seen carrying a rifle at a park where a summer camp was being held. Police were called, and a manhunt was started but the man wasn't found. I'm not criticizing either sides actions in this but my question is, did the man break a law? Carry a rifle isn't a crime in NH. It sounds like he didn't do anything threatening with it. A summer camp isn't really qualified as a school, is it?

Again, if my son was there, I'd agree with the precautions the camp took... better safe than sorry. Did LEO over react?

If you google earth the YMCA, you will see that there is an abundance of woods behind it and as someone pointed out the armory for Londonderry is down the street. IMO, this was an overreaction by all parties involved. Just because some crazy half way around the world shot up a camp full of kids (Norway), does not guarantee that it will happen here. Could it? Sure. Too many people afraid of their own shadows nowadays.

This is the proper exchange in a free society.

Caller: "There's a guy with a gun!!!"

Desk: "Okay - what's he doing with it? Is it a long gun, a handgun? Is he pointing it at anyone?"

Caller: "It's an AK47!! And he's not doing anything.. YET!! It's on his back. He's walking. HURRY GET HERE FAST!"

Desk: "So, the man is walking with a rifle on his back. WAS he doing anything, pointing it at anyone, shooting it? Anything other than walking?"

Caller: "No - BUT HE COULD! PLEASE HURRY! He came out of the woods he's probably some kind of survivalist! THERE ARE CHILDREN HERE YOU KNOW!!!"

Desk: "Have a nice day, sir."

Actually, it;s more like:

Caller: There is a man with a gun.

Desk: "Okay - what's he doing with it? Is it a long gun, a handgun? Is he pointing it at anyone?"

Caller: No, in fact, this area is open to hunting and carrying a gun here is legal. But he has a gun.

Desk: It's probably nothing, but job #1 is to protect my pension. I won't be disciplined if it's nothing, but on the off chance it is something, I could be in big trouble if I don't do something now. I'm rolling a swat team to your location.

What it should be......

Caller: "There is a man with a gun."

Desk: "Okay - what's he doing with it? Is it a long gun, a handgun? Is he pointing it at anyone?"

Caller: "No, in fact, this area is open to hunting and carrying a gun here is legal. But he has a gun."

Desk: "It's probably not an issue. We'll send a patrol by to have a look. Thanks for calling."

Now granted, hunting season hasn't started yet and I think no action isn't the correct response either, but calling out a manhunt???? Really?

I believe Rob was illustrating the reality of most PD's reaction here in MA, whereas I illustrated the ideal of a society living in Liberty.

Went through the same BS in Pelham yesterday. Now granted Veterans Park is right on the state line, Long Pond actually straddles the state line, but these MASHOLES who have invaded Southern NH and are teaching their kids Ma**h*** fear of guns are a problem.

Guess what people, it is LEGAL and accepted practice to have exposed firearms long and short ones in NH.

Get used to it or move back to Massachusetts.

This is why, when I OC around here, I try to do things that would come out as ridiculous on a 911 call.

caller: theres a man with a gun!
911: what's he doing?
caller: OMG HE'S CHECKING HIS MAIL!!! THE HORROR!!! THE HOOORRROOORRR!!!!!!!

One thing I will not do while Open Carrying is check my mail, as I use a PO Box for everything and don't want to be a test case for the post office law.

What it REALLY should be......

Caller: "There is a man with a gun."

Desk: "Okay - what's he doing with it? Is it a long gun, a handgun? Is he pointing it at anyone?"

Caller: "No, he's just minding his own business."

Desk: "Do YOU have a gun?"

Caller: "No, they're icky"

Desk: "Well, then, I'll send a patrol out to check it out....but if the man with a gun goes nuts in the meantime, you'll wish you had one....won't you?"
