Maine: pro-silencer hearing scheduled for tomorrow. UPDATE: Signed

You're better off calling them "cans."

Then you can get a pile of bumper stickers and lawn signs saying, "Free the cans!"

Suddenly, every SJW in the state will be fighting to get this bill passed. Because not allowing ugly women to show their nippies in public is sexist.

Boom - you can now own a silencer.

Leftist gun-grabbers call them "silencers". Knowledgeable people call them "suppressors".

There's a whole pedantic debate over the "correct" word to use.

The original term was "gun muffler" and "silencer" because Hiram Percy Maxim, son of Hiram Maxim of machine gun fame, invented both the first commercially successfully device for dampening firearm muzzle blast and the automobile muffler.

The word "suppressor" is more modern, basically developed as a more feel-good, warm-and-fuzzy, less-charged alternative, by what is now the American Suppressor Association, which is a lobbying organization.

Both are correct terms because (a) the original firearms dampening devices were called "silencers"; and (b) "suppressor" is a more accurate description of what the devices do.

thank you.

It feels like the same PC garbage I put myself through in HS, calling them paintball "markers." It's a gun; there's no shame in that. Similarly, the inventor called them "silencers;" depending on the cartridge they can do just that, but generally it's more accurate to say they suppress. This isn't mags vs clips.

Both FreeTheCans.com and FreeTheCans.org are available... If anyone wants to start something.

I say make it about both, silencers and nipples.

To be fair, the NFA calls them "silencers" too.

The industry attempt to change the lexicon has been mostly foiled by the fact that federal laws were written around a trade name (like Band-Aid vs adhesive bandage) and it's codified almost everywhere based on that. It's been 90 years, and the first one ever made was literally called "the silencer" - I think we lost that battle. It wasn't a nebulously applied scare-word from the get go, it's just become one. If only Hiram Maxim was around to file a copyright dispute...

What about non-res hunters? Jack.
Hit the game over the head with one or another of these;
your Federal license is good for them in Maine.

How about Little Jack? He's only 16. His dad would be with him and has the can on a Form 3. Jack's uncles could just be made RPs on their brother Lance's FFL. All are NH res. Jack.
No, a 16 year old can’t be an RP on an FFL. On the other hand, what you do deep in the woods of Maine is your business.

seems like we should attach that to every proposal to drop the voting age.

"you think at 16 they're responsible enough to vote? then surely they can be a RP in the family FFL."
