I bought a AR-15 lower in NH about a year ago and just relized that I should have registered it in MA with a FA-10 after reading LenS's post.
Question, should I register it ASAP, I think the law says "within 10 days" Does the FA-10 have a purchase date line? If I put the date of purchase (last year) will it send red flag to CHSB? LenS?

Yes the FA-10 has a date of acquisition on it.

Of course since you do not have to register a gun with an FA-10 UNTIL it is brought in state. You could have purchased it a year ago, left it at a relative's home in NH and just brought it into the state this week, right? In that case the date put on it would be the date that the gun crossed "checkpoint Charlie" into MA!

Ofcourse! The relative was using it!!

Okay, one more time, just to clarify...

Let's say, hypothetically of course, that someone (let's call him, oh, Fred) bought a long gun years ago out of state. Could have been a gun show, could have been KTP. He "let a friend (who lives out-of-state) borrow it", but just yesterday decided that he wanted it back.

So if Fred fills out the FA-10 form with today's date and sends it in, everything's fine? Or does it run afoul of "Strawman" purchases?

ALso, there's no required proof of receipt, right? Just the make/model/serial # and place of purchase, correct?

Just checking. Fred may have to pick up two FA-10 forms tomorrow...

Correct. There's no straw purchase - Fred bought it originally. Everything's fine. All you need is make. model, serial# , etc.

newbie question

As I was reading this thread I realised I just purchased (in New Hampshire) a new shotgun for myself as well as a .22 for my son.

Do I have to "register" these here in Ma ? I thought this was not required for non-large capacity long arms. Where would I get these FA-10 forms ?

Please use the search function here on "registration" you will learn a wealth of information.

The answer to your question is actually in my prior post here in this thread. The word "gun" means ALL GUNS.

FA-10 forms are "supposed to be available" at every PD in the state. Just walk in and ask for two (or more to keep for future use). Many PDs decided for one reason or another not to order any more forms or put them out and will tell you to get them from dealers (who have to pay for them), etc. They are just blowing you off. PDs and civilians get them for nothing (taxpayers pay for the printing). Only dealers have to pay for them, and many of them get them pre-printed with their FFL info on them (so you can't use them for "registration"). Worst case, call CHSB and request 4-6 forms. You have 7 days to register them once the guns are brought across state lines into MA. Failure to do so is a crime.

Capacity is, and has always been, irrelevant. ANY gun purchase by a Mass. resident requires filing of an FA-10, other than antiques and replicas thereof.

I get my FA-10s from the police. There's a stack of them next to the dispatcher.

Question: When one buys a long gun out of state, and then brings it into MA, do you register it as a "Registration"?

If so, do you put any information in the Seller Information blocks?

Yes.

No.

Do a search here, I've covered this a number of times. Search for "registration" and you'll find a wealth of info.

Yes, you must register the purchase if you are storing those guns in MA. You may get the forms at any police station in MA.

Another hypothetical situation, lets say Bob, purchased a rifle from CMP last year, it was shipped to Bob's home via FedEx (proof of delivery would exist) and Bob has recently learned about FA10's and wants to be leagal. Is Bob pretty much screwed or would there be a way to rectify a situation like this?
If Bob
a. fills out FA10 with current date for registration he falls to the pains and penalties of purgery as CMP and FedEx have records. (but would they ever check?)
b. does nothing and gets caught, pays huge fine and loses LTC
c. fills out FA10 with actual date of aquisition (red flags, blue lights, silver bracelets?); Is Bob basically pleading guilting and outcome same as b or once you file the FA10 (even if late) you are now in conformance with the law and everyone is happy?

Now I know that you've previously posted in threads where this has been discussed, so I'll just assume that you're having an off day. Question 1: You have to register absolutely every handgun, rifle or shotgun, regardless of capacity, evil features, or caliber that you obtain in any manner and possess in Massachusetts. The only exceptions are for those that you bring with you when moving into Massachusetts. Question 2: Your local police department should have a supply; if they don't or if the refuse to give you any, contact CHSB and they'll send you as many as you need.

Just wondering... are antique rifles covered as items that have to be registered? As far as the BATF is concerned, antiques are not classed as firearms.

MA has a different definition of "what's an antique" <of course>, but if it is a MA-qualified antique, it need not be registered with an FA-10 and can be possessed without any license (although an antique handgun may require a LTC to be "carried" - I'll leave the definitive answer to Scriv and/or C-X).

The 'antique' question, got me thinking.

If the govt does not consider an antique firearm as a firearm, and if you did something to offend the govt which required that they confiscate your firearms, would they legally be able to take your 'antiques' as they are not legally firearms?

Also, do you need a firearms permit, if all you have are antique' non firearms?

Probably really stupid questions from someone who's been around as long as I have, but stupid thinigs seem to pop into my head more now that I'm a geezer.
