If you have to scope it, get what they call the 3rd generation mount. Basically, it hard-mounts in 3 locations on the receiver and is more solid than a single-point mount. I'd skip the Springfield model. I've got a Smith Enterprise mount that a lot here don't like, but on those rare occassions that I do scope mine, it has proved very reliable.
If you scope your M1A, you may not like how high the scope sits above the bore. You'll need to add a pad to the comb of the stock. I tried the Smith Enterprises pad and it was nice but too low. I had to make one out of leather covered foam. I don't know your location but if you're near rte 2 and 495 you can shoot my scoped M1A at Harvard to see if you still want to scope yours.
