M1 Garand Megathread

Although I have not received a correspondence from CMP since the DBU, I got a text from Fed Express indicating that I will receive a package requiring an adult signature tomorrow. No, not that kind of package ;). It is coming from Anniston AL.
I got an alert from Amex today for a charge from CMP, looks like mine might be coming soon as well

I have a pending charge on my Amex from CMP. I ordered two Service grades and sent the paperwork either the day they marked them sold out or the day after-I was bummed when I checked the website later that week and saw they were marked as sold out. I assumed I would get bumped down to Field grade but it seems I may get lucky and get the Service grades. ;) My guess is they knew they were running low and stopped selling them to make sure they would have enough to fill all orders in the pipeline . My guess would be some more Service grades may become available in the not too distant future if they underestimated the orders.

Ooh. Is that the purple DuPage Lammy?

I've got one of them too...

That would look pretty good with one of the DuPage laminate stocks-

That does look good, but I didn't want to change the original stock. It has some history and what I would call character. The action comes out pretty easy, but the rifle is plenty accurate for my purposes. I would love a carbon fiber stock, though!

It arrived today. A close to brand-new Springfield - (0+ and 1+) new wood and very clean. Dated February of '55.

I'm very happy with this rifle.
Wow! That's pretty awesome. Service Grade, correct? How long ago did you order? Obviously we want to see a range report, LOL. Lucky pick- seems like it's hit and miss lately and you were shipped a good one.

And that's the secret to keeping vintage wood in great shape. Buy a stock just for shooting... Preserve the USGI for your grandkids and for ogling.

Its always hit or miss , also figure the strong dividing factor from Service Grade to Field grade is Muzzle and Throat wear. Then over all condition.
The rifle I used for my 30-06 “match” build was a service grade 1+ and 1+ hit looked like shit.
The most recent Danish return Service Grade is lower end of service grade.

@Mountain - Oops, I should have mentioned that. They received the order on May 7 and the DBU came through on Sep 22. The order was for a SG, no sticky.
Separately, I ordered a FG, which they received on Sep 1. This one had a sticky for GI wood and WW2 HR. I regret the sticky and fear it may result in a lower quality unit, as they try to accommodate with slim pickings. Should have just gone with 'best available'. Oh well.

On that FG, you might get lucky and get WW2 wood, but keep in mind regarding your sticky that H&R started making M1's in 1953.

I have a SG IHC on order. Received 4/9, DBU about a month ago, nothing since. I ordered a FG 9/7? I think and no DBU yet.

I missed that they had SG IHC's! I'd like to add an IHC someday.

If they offer .308 Garands again at some point, I think I'll jump for one.

Awesome! So, I asked for something that does not exist. This ought to work out well ;).
I hope the sticky falls off during processing.
you might get one like mine
My order was a sticky for late production SA or HRA
I got a 1942 SA receiver with GI wood and HRA barrel and other HRA parts...

Something tells me they might....they have to had alot of cruddy barreled actions in this lot?

Pics, anybody? There's nothing like gun porn!*

*except for the real thing**

**which means either real porn, a real Garand, or a real woman doing porn (sorry woke police), or best of all: a real woman doing porn with a real Garand!!

For Green members, there's a spotting scope karma just listed. It's a real PITA to shoot iron sights at distance without one.

I can't remember where I read it but is there some kind of modification to shoot normal 30.06 through it? M2 Ball is hard to find and expensive so I haven't shot mine in years.
M2 ball should be the cheapest 30-06 out there.
Right now $1+ round is the norm.
My buddy just picked up a box of 165gn soft points &39/20…. Yikes
IF there is any reason to get into reloading this is by far one of the best.
With the last batch of PPU aimssurplus was selling at $1.30 rd or $650 for the 500rd tin…..that $650 can go a long way into setting yourself up to reloading for all the old war dogs.
I was shooting my Arisaka 99 few weeks ago. Young man and his Great Grandfather approached me and his GGS says, my pops wants to ask you some questions.
I look at him and say sure: pops points at my rifle and says JAP rifle, I said yes sir.
He says Hmmm, tough SOBs those japs.
i was marine corp south pacific.
He then says where you get ammo? I brought a few of those home with me. Could not find ammo and I sold them off in the 70s. Told him I reload and use cast bullets…. He laugh and says , did not even think of that back then.

Received my order from CMP yesterday. 2 service grades. One is a Springfield from June of 1942 with some character to the wood-I think it is original SA wood by the markings. It has been around the block quite a bit. The other is an H&R from 1956 with new CMP wood.

I do have a question about filling out the registration on the gun transaction portal for MA. Reading through the MA gun law forums on here I see folks saying not to fill out the seller information. eFA-10 clarification for C&R I'm confused why you wouldn't put the seller information down. Is this because CMP is not an FFL? I'm new to this hobby and the only two other purchases I have made, one was a face to face with another MA resident and one was at a brick and mortar gun shop.

As the CMP is allowed by congressional decree to ship rifles to your doorstep, there is no seller present during your registration. The key word is 'registration'. You are not entering a sale but a registration, basically the same as if you moved here with a M1 and therefore you leave the seller blank.

Congrats on the nice rifles.
