M1 Carbine - UPDATE: Got it, Pics and Questions in latest post. Thanks

CMP is allowed by a charter created by Congress to receive surplus firearms from the us army (for free) it then can distribute them to qualified US citizens for the promotion of firearm safety and marksmenship. The money they charge for the items goes to support the cost of the mission of the cmp.

Thanks for clarifying that. I'm pretty sure that rifles the army supplied to other countries aren't considered 'exported' either so when they are returned, they wouldn't be 'imported'.

Any update on this news report, "President Obama issues executive order targeting firearms," August 29, 2013?

"One Executive Order bans re-importation of surplus U.S.-made rifles, including M1 Garands and M1 Carbines. Such rifles are used in Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) competitions. For decades the CMP has sold M1 Garands and M1 Carbines, many re-imported from arsenals overseas, to qualified American shooters. The White House stated: 'Today, the Administration is announcing a new policy of denying requests to bring military-grade firearms back into the United States to private entities, with only a few exceptions such as for museums.'”

It does block others like Samco, Century and others. The cmp is not affected

Last time I was shopping M1C at the Marlborough show, the "service grade" quality WW2 era ones seemed to be running around $900. You're right not to make the mistake of buying a commercial clone. I picked up an '80s era Iver Johnson stainless clone and it was nothing but trouble. Sold it as a box of parts.

Yes, its bullsh*t with regards to the CMP. From Orest himself...

"The CMP is not a firearms importer...

The only way any rifle or carbine from any country can find its way to the CMP is if the country returns “loaned” rifles back to the US Army - at no cost to the U.S. When that happens, the CMP "may" possibly receive some of those rifles."

With regard to carbines same for CMP as M1; but they run in cycles. The last lot from Bavaria went quickly and temporarily drove the street prices down bellow $700.00. Frankly I would check the CMP, jouster and mil-surp forums. The prices tend to be much more reasonable. Frankly the MA gun show circuit tends to feature the same players trying to peddle the same over priced goods

Orest Michaels's statement clarifies that CMP would be unlikely to have involvement in sales of M1 Garands or M1 Carbines if they were repatriated from Korea. Their repatriation evidently remains blocked by the administration, meaning that commercial importers are not able to obtain them for resale to us.

No, they wouldn't have involvement if Korea decided to sell them to importers. But the point of the quote is that CMP is not a firearms importer, it gets its guns from the Army, it doesn't buy them and the executive order is banning imported or re-imported guns. Apples and oranges with regards to CMP guns.

If the US "army" does not have them on "loan" to a foriegn government. Then the cmp will never receive the items owned by that government. Before the obama ban those governments with us surplus arms which they owned or flat out purchased from US could sell them to a dealer licensed to import. Like the batch of Israeli carbines that can in just before the ban.
The only way to get any surplus rifle from the cmp other than the M1 garand is the cmp auction. You wont be to happy with those prices on the auction...

This is purely an executive move, no? A future president who doesnt hate this countries heritage could reverse this with a snap of the fingers, right?

i think you are correct, I also think buy what little I read doesnt really stop the ATF from giving the green light for importation? Its more of a recommendation ? IDK its all FUBAR, How many EOs have been reversed anyhows?

Grabbed the gun today for 700 with 2 mags and 100 rounds of ammo. The metal is in good condition, no rust or pitting. The bore seems to be good (no way to gauge it) The stock has certainly seen better days. Now ideally I'd like to clean up the stock, including lifting some of the dents, but of course would like your thoughts on the issue. BTW I do have the CMP certificate and receipt, the receipt reads service grade. Also, the rear sight will need to be shimmed. There seemed to be an attempt at staking it but the sight can be slid out by hand.

Cartouches I could find on the stock:

More pics of the stock... it appears to be starting to crack along the grain under the op-rod, any way to fix this to keep it from getting worse?

I pulled the stock off and the trigger group is made by inland.

I am studying for an orgo test but this weekend I will have time to clean it up. I plan on doing a little bit of "test firing" followed by a full strip down and scrubbing with CLP. I may try shimming the rear sight first.

As I mentioned, if the stock isn't anything special I would really like to fix where it is starting to crack, give it a thorough rub down with mineral spirits to get the grime out, steam the bumps out where I can, and buff with steel wool and apply a few coats of BLO.

Thoughts?

Mike

I think that's the wrong type of ammo :)

In all seriousness be careful with the rear sight as it looks like it's been restaked at least once. It also has an early flat bolt which is cool.

You missed the smiley on his comment about it being the wrong ammo for that gun.

I was successful in getting some dents out of a handguard using an iron. Get a thin cloth you don't care about like an old white t-shirt and soak it and wring it out. Fold it once or twice and put it on the stock where you want to lift the dents and press a steam iron cranked up to max against it till it stops steaming. Repeat till you get the results you like. The cloth will be pretty much wrecked when you're done and I think t-shirt type material is better than say a terrycloth towel.

I think you could fix that crack with a good wood glue. Shouldn't be as much stress on that stock as there would be on say a garand.

This, and your loading it in the wrong end. :)

I'd be interested in the make as well.

If I recall, the "PI on the milled rear sight is for Inland. I think the U on the front sight is for Underwood. But don't quote me...

After removing the rear sight you can peen the edges of the dovetail on the receiver to tighten it up. If that isn't enough then I would shim. I have a bunch of brass shim stock in the shop if you need any.

It was heavily staked from re arsenal. Usually sight is removed to varify manufacture at some point. Then it is abused by more staking
I peened my dove tail on the receiver I also made small "dimple" on the bottom flat of the sight. plus I applied a small amount of blue loctite after I finalized my windage zero.

Yes, I can see that. Staking and peening are two different things though. When peening, the entire edge of the dovetail (on the receiver) is lowered tightening the joint along its length. Staking is used to lock the joint once the two parts are joined.

I would bed all those staking points where not done in an arsenal refurbishment but probably by an owner looking for a quick fix.

What's involved in peening the dovetail?

Mike

Mike, once the rear sight is removed you would tap down the edges of the receiver's dovetail. This can be done with a ball/peen hammer but is best done using a steel ball of sufficient diameter to contact opposite edges. Sit the ball in the slot and tap with a hammer moving along the length of the dovetail.

While I may have balls of steel, I don't think they would work for this purpose. Where does one acquire mythical said steel balls?

Mike

McMaster-Carr has them. You could also find a large ball bearing. An alternative is to use the ball end of a ball-peen hammer...set it in the groove then strike it. Looking at my M1, a 0.750" ball is about right.

Basically, you don't want to be swinging a hammer directly onto the receiver. You place the tool on the spot you want to work and strike the tool... in this case, the ball.

You could also use a steel rod, working each side of the dovetail individually with the rod heid perpendicularly to the slot and at an angle upwards.

The entire lip doesn't need to be deformed but should have multiple deformations along its length.
