Lyman 45 acp cartridge gauge

What is the purpose for the machined slot on the top of a 45acp cartridge gauge? Its like a small step down from the top of the cartridge checker.

I have case gauges in .223, .308 and .30/06 and they all have that slot. I don't know what it's for either and I don't have any instructions to read.

i believe that slot acts as your go/no go gauge for case length. as long as the round stays between the top of the die and doesn't go below that cut surface your good.

They are the headspace indicators. Your rounds should not be below or above it.
