I am looking for suggestions on a low power scope and mount. Something in the 1.5-4 power range. I am looking to keep my budget as low as possible obviously but don't want a $50 wallmart special. I hope to spend $500 or less. This is going on an AR with 16" barrel. Besides range use it will probably see some use coyote hunting. I am looking for some kind of "QD" mount. Just something that I can remove without tools and will hold zero. I know I am going to get suggestions for LaRue which I 100% agree with it just sucks they are $200 or more. I know you get what you pay for having bought a bunch of stuff from them just seeing if there is others out there. Thanks for the help.

It doesn't need to be a QD just something I can remove without tools and will hold zero. I have BUIS on it that I want to use at the range as well as a home defence type weapon if I ever had the need. I have both handguns and shotguns that would b my first choice for that though.

Burris TAC30 1-4X24mm. Mine in a JP one piece mount, but it is not removable without tools. Both would come in under $500 with enough left for a scope lever from 3Gun Stuff.

It seams they don't make that 4200 anymore or something. Couldn't find any in stock anywhere or on their web site. Checking the Buris out more however I have a bad experience with them once so I shy away now.

I was looking at the JP mounts and while I know they make good stuff however I would just assume throw in a little more cash and get a LaRue if thats the rout I am going to go.

Has anyone had any experience with Vortex glass?

Another VOTE for Burris. I have a MTAC 1-4X24 with a Burris PEPR QD mount and I have a XTR (More money but worth it) with a Larue mount. Also more money and also worth it.

Every few months Midway has deals on Leupolds. Got a 1.5-4 with a 30mm tube and illuminated reticle for about $425.

That 1.25-4 4200 is a nice scope. The 1/3 MOA adjustments are a little odd, but workable. (Note the Amazon product description and product specifications disagree on that) Bushnell recently merged the 3200 and 4200 scope lines under the name 'Elite', so 4200 scopes like that one have been discounted because of a name change. For example.... I've had a 3200 and a 4200 for a couple years and I like them. Neither is a low magnification like you're looking at, though.

Ya I have a 3200 3-9 on a Marlin mod60 .22 that I have and have had a so so experience with it. It seamed after about 2 years it got slightly foggy. You can't really notice it at longer ranges but a little closer you can notice it. Especially in lower light. Has anyone had any experience with Vortex glass? I know you cant go wrong with Leupold, I have quite a few of them just weighing other possibly cheaper options.

A couple of years back I got a VARI-X3 1.5-5x20 Leupold for $75.
The exchange in Beaufort SC had clearenced some items, I guess this might have been mismarked.

So there are deals out there ro be had.

I just received the Vortex PST 1-4x24 that I ordered (http://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=VO-PST-14ST-A). These seem to be going for $499 from pretty much every vendor that has them. I haven't mounted it yet (the completed lower comes next week - just got the tracking number - yippie!!!), but I am very impressed. Very solid construction, 30mm tube, and an illuminated (battery) reticle and a lifetime warranty. I got the mil-dot reticle version, since all the cool operators are using mil dot ranging. The manual is pretty cool, showing photos of an enemy soldier, rather than a deer, when explaining the imaging reticle. The glass looks pretty clear. I have seen some reviews where people who like it claim "almost" Nightforce clarity, however, absent a double blind study, I suspect the power of suggestion and cognitive dissonance could be at play - this glass is crisp. I think this scope hits the sweet spot on the price/performance curve for a low power 1-something scope. This is a second focal plane scope, which is just fine (and perhaps preferable) for a 1-4x.

I have a weaver 1-3 (http://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=WV3) on one of my AR's, and it works nicely. JP has them for $189, and they are $183 at Optics planet. Even if John Paul was not a friend, I would pay the extra $6 to get his level of support (very honorable folks to deal with).

If you have loads of $$, and don't mind paying $2Kish for a scope that has only a 2 year warranty, the Swarvoski Z6i is regarded as the ultimate in the low power variable range when cost and warranty are not considerations.

If you are looking at a 1-N scope for action shooting, I suggest you make sure the 1x is a "True 1x". Some of the "1ish" scopes don't have a true 1x, which interferes with using both eyes open and treating it as a "dot scope". All of the scopes mentioned in this post are "true 1X".

PM me if you want to meet to check them out in person (Hopkinton, MA).
