I just received the Vortex PST 1-4x24 that I ordered (
http://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=VO-PST-14ST-A). These seem to be going for $499 from pretty much every vendor that has them. I haven't mounted it yet (the completed lower comes next week - just got the tracking number - yippie!!!), but I am very impressed. Very solid construction, 30mm tube, and an illuminated (battery) reticle and a lifetime warranty. I got the mil-dot reticle version, since all the cool operators are using mil dot ranging. The manual is pretty cool, showing photos of an enemy soldier, rather than a deer, when explaining the imaging reticle. The glass looks pretty clear. I have seen some reviews where people who like it claim "almost" Nightforce clarity, however, absent a double blind study, I suspect the power of suggestion and cognitive dissonance could be at play - this glass is crisp. I think this scope hits the sweet spot on the price/performance curve for a low power 1-something scope. This is a second focal plane scope, which is just fine (and perhaps preferable) for a 1-4x.
I have a weaver 1-3 (
http://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=WV3) on one of my AR's, and it works nicely. JP has them for $189, and they are $183 at Optics planet. Even if John Paul was not a friend, I would pay the extra $6 to get his level of support (very honorable folks to deal with).
If you have loads of $$, and don't mind paying $2Kish for a scope that has only a 2 year warranty, the Swarvoski Z6i is regarded as the ultimate in the low power variable range when cost and warranty are not considerations.
If you are looking at a 1-N scope for action shooting, I suggest you make sure the 1x is a "True 1x". Some of the "1ish" scopes don't have a true 1x, which interferes with using both eyes open and treating it as a "dot scope". All of the scopes mentioned in this post are "true 1X".
PM me if you want to meet to check them out in person (Hopkinton, MA).
