My freinds father recently passed away and while going through his collection a sound suppressor was located. He lives in a state where it is legal to posses this item BUT he can not locate the tax stamp. He knows his father went through the propper channels when he bought it but the paper work is missing/yet to be located. What does this mean as far as resale or possession (he is undecided)? are duplicates issued?

What you are looking for is a tax paid form 4. Try to find out where he got the suppressor. The seller would more than likely have a copy. Everyone who deals in NFA stuff makes lots of copies of everything. Jack.

I had him try to contact the manufacturer Jonathan Arthur Ciener INC. (JAC INC.) in Florida but they are notorious for no customer service. They are living up to their reputation and he has not heard back

Unfortunately, most people in this business tend to keep their mouths shut because they don't know who they are talking to. Your buddy may want the lawyer up. The penalties for having, or having ATF determine that he has contraband is not what he wants. Keep looking for paperwork. There could have been a dealer involved. Jack.

No need to make this more complicated than it has to be. Your friend has all the info (suppressor info will be on the can) and he should know his dad's info. So two easy solutions. (If by some bizaar and unlikely cricumstance dead dad got it illegally, they [atf] will have a hard time going after him now [rolleyes])

Call NFA branch w/ above info and request a certified copy of the form 4

OR

Just have the exectutor transfer it out (of course used suppressors dont exactly have a huge resale market)

As usual, securitboy is exactly correct. Call NFA branch at (304) 616-4500. Have all the required info at hand when you call - Manufacturer info, serial number, and your friends dad's name and address. Ask for a certified copy of the form. Jon Ciener will be of no help to you so you can abandon that avenue. In any case the supressor most likely didn't transfer from Ciener to your Dad any way.
