Hey all.

doing a new AR build. I'm trying to find a 14.5/14.7" bbl, rifle length gas, preferably 1:8 twist chambered in .223 Wylde. Anyone know where to look for such a thing? I know shilen makes them for the salient tier 1, but I'm not finding it anywhere.

if all else fails I'll go to a gunsmith and have one made.

thanks, jack

Thanks! I would go as long as 16" if I can't find the 14.5". But in really trying to do some experimenting with the rifle length system. Looks like Google will be getting some exercise tonight

Would a rifle length gas system reliably cycle a round on a 14.5" barrel?
It seems too short.......

I'm guessing this is what you are trying to play with, but a rifle length 14.5 inch barrel is going to have very very little barrel past the gas port.

Because of this, the dwell time of the gas pressure is going to be very short. To make up for the short dwell time, you will need to pass a lot of gas, quickly and or make the reciprocating mass easier to move. This will require either a very large gas port, a very soft mainspring, or a very light operating system. Or some combination of the 3.

Good luck. What are you trying to experiment with?

It could with a big gas port, soft spring, and light reciprocating mass. Or some combination of the 3.

p.s. One other thing. For a dedicated suppressed gun, this might be a great choice. The can acts like a pressure accumulator and greatly extends the dwell time.

If I go mid length I'll be using the BAD lightrigid for sure. Love that company and their barrels are supposed to be killer accurate.

yeah it will cycle reliably with a rifle length provided you open the gas port a bit. The salient arms does it, and I know of a few others that have made it work. but I'm not shelling out $3k for a cool rail and a crapload of price markup for the salient. Here's what I'm thinking for the build:

Battle arms lightweight billet upper/lower
battle arms 6.5ounce minimalist stock/tube w/ qd endplate
Battle arms ambi/45 safety
jp scs
geissele sd3g or maybe a timney 3.5#
geissele mk4 13" keymod
bcg will either be BCM phosphate, or I might try the new cryptic coatings pvd carrier
rifle length barrel with aforementioned specs
undecided on muzzle at the moment
magpul pro buis
aimpoint t1 2moa on a 1/3rd cowitness

It's unorthodox for sure. But it can be done, and since it can, I want to try it. Basically. Hahaha.

will not be suppressed (MA), but if all goes
well it should shoot like a BB gun. If it goes to hell, I'll just swap to a middy. But a guys gotta try first lol

After many days of googling, I believe I have ended my quest for a longer than mid gas system on a 14.5 build. Looks like
lantac will be producing a line of barrels, specifically a 14.5 with an intermediate gas system. No weight specs as of yet, but it's a .223 Wylde chamber in 1:7 twist with what appears to have a nitrited finish. I'll be sure to post more info as it becomes available. Thanks to all who chimed in. If only they went 1:8 it would exactly what I was looking for.
