Hi all,

Im looking to mount 2 scopes, one rifle one handgun.

Rifle is a typical bushmaster AR carbine length. I would like to put a scope on it to see how far I can push the distance, Im having trouble seeing much of a 12"x12" target at 150yrds. I would like something with decent magnification, nothing fancy or too expensive $300 is my limit Im willing to spend.

Handgun is a S&W Performance Center 460 Magnum with a 8 3/4 compensated/weighted barrel. I know I can push it out further than 50yrds easily. But I need something that will take the shock, I was told today that I was shaking the ground at the other end of the range line. Ultimately I would like to hunt with it. Again decent but not bank breaking.

On both, mount recomendations would be helpfull as well. I have never really owned anything before that would be able to push some distance so I never really had a use or need for a scope.

And lastly a good spotting scope.

Thanks for your input. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Super Sniper or Bushnell Trophy 6-18x40 for the rifle in that price range.

I wouldn't go over 3 power for the AR
Check out Cabelas they have the Leupold® Mark AR™ Series Riflescopes 1-4 power would work

And lastly a good spotting scope.

Get a Konus Kounuspot 80:

$180 from B&H. It's 90% as good as a Kowa, at 20% of the price. The tripod that comes with it sucks though, you'll need some other stand.

I've got one of these and I can see .22 holes in targets at 200Y with mine. At 600Y I can watch the distortion/trail from a bullet going downrange.
It's not the best scope out there, but it's well into "good enough", and the price is right.

I second the Super Sniper.. I have the fixed 20x on my AR308 and it holds zero real nice and has plenty of adjustment to reach out to further distances. Check out swfa.com they also have a clearance site I believe it is www.thesamplelist.com

If you get up to my area I will gladly let you give my AR a try and see how you like the scope.

+1. Great advice.

As a general rule of thumb, I find this advice useful:

If you are shooting at 100 yards a 1x optic will suffice.

If you expect to shoot at 400 yards a 4x optic will do.

If you intend on shooting 1000 yards a 10x optic is what you need.

However, you can often do more than what the conventional wizdom above suggests. I've hit man sized targets at 400 yards with a 2.5x and at 600 yards with a 4x.

Take a look at the low end Meade telescopes for a spotting scope. Used ones are small money (100 bucks for a ETX70) and the optics are awesome. I use a Meade ETX90 and at a 100 yards it's like I'm standing next to the target. When you can determine the size of the diamond on a woman's necklace across a lake......

Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4

It has clear glass, nice reticle, no illumination, but at least close in you can use the 1.5 setting as a way to engage 100-yards and in. Put it in a Burris PEPR mount and you'll be GTG...If you decide on the PEPR, PM me - I have one that I'll let go reasonably...

I am a huge fan of Leupold...check the KTP used gun website if your looking for cheap. They list all their used scopes online and have very reasonable prices for them, unlike much else they offer.

Thanks for the all the input. Although I was hoping for a little more about handgun scopes... Oh well just have to do some more diggin around myself.

I have a Simmons Prohunter 2-6x32 It says "model 822010" on the box. It's this one:

http://www.opticsplanet.net/picture-4-simmons-prohunter-2-6x32-handgun-scope.html

But I didn't buy from them. I think I got it at samplelist.com, but it might have been Midway.

I've used it on my 686 and S&W 500 and it doesn't appear to have taken any damage from the nearly 100 rounds of .500 magnum and similar number of .357.

I don't feel like much of an expert on handgun scopes, but this one seems to work and withstand pretty significant recoil, albeit with limited testing.

What options do I have for mounting one of these on my AR with fixed carry handle and stock (round) military forearm?
Something easily mounted and dismounted incase I want the iron sites.

I have something very close to this:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=553591

It works well. It does put the scope up kind of high, but it works for me.

If you want a low one, there are a bunch of things like this:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=166682

which put the scope in front of the carry handle. Wouldn't work with a long scope, but works for red-dot types.

Thanks, these give me some interesting options that I will explore.

I use the first one on my AR with fixed handle and its a very solid mount.

Wish you'd spoken up earlier<wink> /really/ I had a Bushnell Trophy 6X18X40 NIB for cheap 2yr's ago.~ All good thing come to those that wait. Unless were talking marriage. [wink] I'd save up and get a good Trijicon-JM0
