Australian Gun Law Update

in 2nd Amendment

From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi all, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, so the criminals still possess their guns!)

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note Americans, before it's too late!

This info isn't new, it dates back to the late 90's:

Because the Australian Constitution prevents the taking of property without just compensation the federal government introduced the Medicare Levy Amendment Act 1996 to raise the predicted cost of A$500 million through a one-off increase in the Medicare levy. The gun buy-back scheme started on 1 October 1996 and concluded on 30 September 1997.[23] The buyback purchased and destroyed more than 631,000 firearms, mostly semi-auto .22 rimfires, semi-automatic shotguns and pump-action shotguns. Only Victoria provided a breakdown of types destroyed, and in that state less than 3% were military style semi-automatic rifles.

Snopes -- Mixed bag of fact and fiction.

This is precisely the type of reporting upon which we CANNOT rely. In one form or another this story has been kicking around the inter-webs since 2001. We cit-able numbers and facts. This drivel doesn't help us make any kind of public policy case.

evidently this is from the mid 90's. Anyone do a indepth study of Aus crime rates in the past few years? I am sure its still the same, but I would like to have the hard numbers for the anti's to ignore.

Based off of this BS email that is going around I did some fact searching and found the following from the Austrailian GVT website:

Total Homicides between 1996 and 2010 remained fairly steady.....between 260 and 370 per year

Total Assaults however went from a LOW in 1996 (imediatley before the ban) and steadily increased every year until the high of 176,077 in 2008.....2009 there were 175,277 and in 2010 there were 171,083.

Info retreived from http://www.aic.gov.au/documents/0/B/6/{0B619F44-B18B-47B4-9B59-F87BA643CBAA}facts11.pdf

The email from the OP is obviously junk because it references a ban tha toccured last year.....Aussies gave up there guns in 1996. But based on the facts from the above info the ban in austrailia did not work.......for instance why did assaults go sky high imediately after the ban?

You also need to look at rates - i.e. homicide or assault rate per 100,000. That's the only way to even starting doing an apples to apples comparison.
