I'm doing the Appleseed in CT this day, but this sounds like an awesome thing to go to. Any interest in staging/attending something like this with me closer to Massachusetts? (On a day I'm free, obviously [smile] )

PRECISION RIFLE MATCH REGISTRATION 4/22/07
9:00am registration, events begin 10:00am. Lunch and beverages will be furnished.

Current members: $15.00 Public entry: $30.00

Questions or issues: [email protected]

This is an "open to the public" event, and is a fantastic way to learn about the club. Therallypoint.org is also having an event that day on the 50yd range, and crossover betweeen both is encouraged.

The spirit of it is to get people with the gear off the benches a little, and into a situation where they can begin to put it to work practically. The registration fee is reasonable, and will benefit the club, and allow us to expand the program. The future could include a stalk event, two man team competition, etc.

This is NOT by any means a super-ninja competition, and is run with a friendly, fun, and helpful spirit, so that everyone does well. That said, I hope as you read the events that you do realize that it's also not geared toward the person who is holding a tactical rifle for the first time.

Equipment you will need:

1. Center fire tactical rifle with optics, already zeroed. Any firing action or caliber under .50BMG is eligible, sling required. One rifle must be used for all events, and its bore may not be cleaned between events other than to address a safety issue (e.g. obstruction/squib).
2. Ammo for the above, at least 50-60 rounds of match grade ammunition.
3. A field oriented firing platform (bipod, rucksack, roll-mat, grandma's widow's hump...) No bench, sandbags, rear bags, or machine rests.
4. Field grade binoculars.
5. Spotting scope.
6. Camouflage for person/rifle/gear appropriate for the season and locale (ghillie preferred, but not necessary).
7. Pen, pencil, small paper notebook for making a range card.
8. Magic marker.
9. ordinary protective gear for range use. The AO will likely be in full green so bring insect/tick repellent spray.
10. Physical fitness and endurance, sufficient to allow you an entire day's longevity under competitive stress.
11. A friendly, helpful, easy-going attitude.

We'll help wherever we can if somebody doesn't have everything. Don't sweat it.

I. Intro / Registration / Safety briefing

A SAFETY VIOLATION SUCH AS SWEEPING THE LINE WITH A MUZZLE, OR BEING LOCKED AND LOADED WHEN YOU SHOULD NOT WIN THE AWFUL PRIZE OF INSTANT DISQUALIFICATION

II. First Event -- Item identification

a. Competitors will be shown a mixture of items for one minute, similar to these:

1. Box of commercial ammo
2. A GI sandbag
3. A rifle magazine
4. A camouflage flak vest
5. A canteen
6. A rifle/MG barrel
7. A (mock) molotov cocktail
8. A rifle scope
9. A camouflage boonie hat
10. A US green ammo can

b. The items (some or all) will be placed in a defined area at distance.
Competitors will have a time limit to locate and sketch these items using optics (scope or binos)

III. Target identification

a. Competitors will be shown a sketch or photograph of three targets, and must correctly identify them by number and position among a group of decoys from a distance of 100 yards.

IV. Fieldcraft

a. Competitors will proceed to the target location in a safe, cold-range condition.
b. Competitors will have binoculars.
c. A mock target will be presented, and a minimum distance and lateral boundaries from that target made apparent.
d. Competitors will have 15 minutes to blend themselves into the landscape as much as possible in order to avoid detection, while maintaining a firing position on the mock target. Cards will be displayed randomly at the target, and competitors will have to identify them later.
e. Judges will use binos to attempt to locate the competitors. Points will be awarded in reverse order of detection. The judge will not know the location of the competitors ahead of time, and will
observe from a distance, near the mock target.

The judge may advance toward the competitors 10 paces at a time only if they are completely undetectable.

V. Target Engagement events

a. Cold bore 100y shot -- Competitor will fire a single, cold bore 100y shot at a scaled 500y target. Closest to the center wins the event. Targets are pasted for continued use.

b. 500y targets -- Competitor will fire 10 shots at the 3/4/5 AQT style targets at 100y.
- Hits in the white are scored as a miss.
- Field position shooting, Bipod/Prone/Rucksack OK, no bench, no bags.
- All rounds must be fed from the rifle's magazine (no out of spec handloads)
- Ten minutes to complete the course of fire.

c. 1000y targets -- Competitor will fire 10 shots at the 3/4/5 AQT style targets at 200y.
- Hits in the white are scored as a miss.
- Field position shooting, Bipod/Prone/Rucksack OK, no bench, no bags.
- All rounds must be fed from the rifle's magazine (no out of spec handloads)
- Ten minutes to complete the course of fire.

d. Reactive target engagement -- Each competitor engages reactive targets at 200y (simulated 500y shots)
- Targets are constructed of cardboard, with a balloon inside a hole in it, or plastic material.
- Bursting the balloon reveals a white (paper) background, indicating a hit.
- Center of Mass will not be immediately apparent.
- Time based, with number of shots fired to score the event.

e. - Helium balloon event -- Four helium balloons float in the breeze at 200y in front of each target backing. Two white, two red.
- When competitors are ready, the RSO calls either "RED!" or "WHITE!"
- Competitors have 1 minute to eliminate the selected color, while avoiding damage to the other color.
- Heavy penalty for shooting a balloon that is an innocent bystander.

f. - "Off hand" shooting -- Competitors engage the remaining balloons with the rifle on the weak side.
- Deduction for any misses.

g. Rifle duel – Competitors are paired up randomly. First to hit a dime sized circle wins the duel. Winners of level one compete against each other in single elimination to the last shooter.

h. Stress fire – Competitors will receive a mild brass shampoo from the A/RSO.

VI. Range estimation event
a. Competitors have a time limit to provide accurate range estimates of three scale targets at the 200 yard line.
- The size of the scaled target in feet/inches will be provided.

VII. Moving target event
a. Still working this out. Radio controlled car towing a helium balloon?

VIII. Reprise

a. Tally of scores
b. Accolades & prizes
c. lunch (burgers, fried rice, vietnamese Pho)
d. Camaraderie, humorous anecdotes, and group photos
e. Other shooting of interesting firearms until dusk
