Late afternoon yesterday a friend and I decide to stop into KTP. We had been out looking at Harleys and Triumphs in Portsmouth and it was on the way back so we stopped in to see if there was anything we couldn’t live without.

I’m in the section with all the long guns, over near the gunsmithing station and I see three or four 14-16 year olds walk past the aisles about 6 feet away from me. The first two pass bye me, and then the third one in the pack reaches into the rack of rifles, picks one up fairly swiftly (this was the part that caught my eye), walks up behind teenager #1 that was in front and with a big stupid fu*king grin; sort of like watch this, it will be funny; shoulders the rifle with his finger on the trigger and points it directly at the back of his friends head (the muzzle was about 6 inches from his head). The laughter for idiots #2 and #3 make teenager #1 turn around; and he has a rifle pointed at his face.

Well this all transpired in front of my eyes in about 3 seconds. I was amazed that someone would do such a stupid thing right in front of me, and I reacted. I don’t even think it was a conscious process, but I screamed in about the loudest meanest voice I could muster (loud enough that the entire KTP Firearms section became dead quiet and looked directly at me)

“HEY!........ I DON’T THINK IT IS FUNNY THAT YOU ARE POINTING A RIFLE AT YOUR FRIENDS HEAD.”

“THAT’S NOT FUNNY!”

At this point my command voice and mean look managed to get his attention. I think I said some more things along the same lines, but I can recollect exactly. I think I may have said it its not funny twice.

Idiot #3 is a little dumfounded to be confronted by nasty patron speaking in such tones and says “I don’t know anything about guns” to which I reply:

“THEN PUT THE THING BACK IN THE GODDAMN RACK AND DON’T TOUCH IT …..

THAT WASN’T FUNNY…..

NOW GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!”

Idiot #3 complies with my pointing motion to put it back in the rack and then all of them promptly beat feet….I assume directly to the bathroom.

At this point a sales person comes up to me from down the aisle and looks directly at me and says “Can I help you sir?”

So I explain in a much softer but still angry tone (I hope that he didn’t feel that my anger was directed at him) what just transpired before my eyes. Well he was pretty professional and I let him know that these two punks were horsing around and I wasn’t willing to have someone behave like that around me, and the last thing I want to see is a kid with the back of his head blown off right here in KTP.

Well I talked with him for about two or three minutes and he understood what was going on and said thank you, and I apologized to him for making such a ruckus. We browsed for another 20 minutes and I purchased something and then we left.

I have to be honest, it really upset me that this punk did that to his friend. My blood pressure, heart rate and respirations were much higher for quite a while. It wasn’t until we got back to Exit 8 that I really calmed down.

Anyway I had a good night sleep and had some time to think about it. I hope that my reaction was warranted and I hope that the idiot will someday realize what a stupid thing he did. I wonder if I should have gone up and grabbed the rifle out of his hands, or insisted that the management call the cops. After I thought about it, I realized that his actions could be construed as assault with a deadly weapon. I know that if he did that to me, I would have grappled the thing from his hands and brought him down to the ground and held is punk ass there for the cops. I’ve been thinking about the absent clueless parents that let these morons browse around the KTP. Just a lot of things going through my mind after last night. It really shook me up, but I thought I would share with all of you.

Kudos for stepping into a bad "joke" and setting them straight. It does not happen very often but once in a great while a round is left in a supposedly cleared firearm, sometimes with deadly results. The kid obviously had no proper firearms training.

You did good. And I hope that the KTP staff was properly thankful.

I agree with the other posters as well... you did the best thing you could have. That stuff just completely pisses me off and I can undestand how you BP was elevated for so long.

If I found my kids doing something like that they wouldn't see the light of day for a lonnngggg time.

EDIT... My punishment would keep them in the house for a long time.. that's what I meant in case anyone thought differently.

One thing is for sure, the kid will most likely never do something that dumb again. Who knows, you may have saved someone's life in the long run.

While KTP is like a gun owners heaven with all kinds of goodies you can touch, shoulder and play with, it makes me happy for gun stores that dont have weapons on the floor...first off, i cant stand when i go there and see some one shoulder a $900 hunting rifle, pull the bolt back and dry fire the hell out of the gun...in my opinion, thats now a used firearm...KTP is too understaffed to have sales staff constantly monitering the long gun section which is too bad cuz ive seen too many instances of people F'n around with guns like idiots...i know the guns may all have barrel plugs but all it takes is one psycho to pop out the plug and start wreaking havoc...i think about that every time i see someone shoulder a rifle there

Thanks everyone for the posts. I appreciate the feedback, and it helps to vent the anger I had.

I knew instinctively from this kids facial expression; demeanor and laughing that it was a joke, but to see a rifle pointed right at someone’s head, literally inches away really bothered me.

I’ve had muzzles swipe me more times than I can count, but most every time I can remember, it was inadvertent. The action was open with a flag, fingers were off the trigger or something similar. I guess it was the deliberateness that this kid showed that got me fired up. His intent was to stick the muzzle right in his buddies face.

I know KTP has plugs in the chambers for good reason. If I remember correctly, someone was talking about or caught some nut job trying to sneak ammo into guns in gun stores a while back with the intent of having someone get injured. I know that gun stores have NDs from time to time because of stupid stuff and I’m glad that nothing happened except for some loud talk. I don’t shop at KTP a lot, but stop in from time to time. I’ve had other experiences there where people inadvertently point guns at others. I always feel a little uneasy.

ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction... There are no ifs ands or buts about it.
Assume every gun is loaded, and don't point one at anything you are not willing to destroy.

Those are the lessons I've been taught along the way. Sound advice, and it should be spread. You definitely did the right thing.

Funny thing is, if there was anybody at KTP who was CCW (which how could there not be?) they would have been within their rights to draw on this asswad. You have to assume the rifle is loaded if it is being pointed at somebody/something, therefore your life is now in danger. THAT would have made things interesting. Scary, but interesting.

I think you absolutely did the right thing...Good for you to be able to step in like that. Stupid shit like that shouldn't be tolerated, and hopefully the kid will have learned a lesson.

Yea...I agree with what everyone else here is saying. You did the right thing.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason that the ammo is outside at the Big E gunshows is for this reason.

Someone bought ammo (before it was outside) and then was looking at a gun. Somehow, the gun got loaded and a round went off and put a hole in the roof.

So, it just might have gotten loaded and no one knew because if the kid didn't know about guns, the he sure as hell didn't clear it.

If I was part of KTP, I would have found those kids, and banned them and thier parents for life.

GOOD JOB!

Thanks for stepping into a serious situation and doing the right thing. Too many times, people (sheeple) just sit and watch, either too numb to move, or too busy convincing themselves, "it's not my problem."

You taught those kids a lesson that could save their lives someday, you showed everyone else in the room what could and should be done, and you're letting us know about it so we can spread the word.

Thank You!

Well done! It only takes one moron to ruin something for eveybody. Something terrible could have happened and caused kittery to have their licence pulled due to the media blowing it up and calling for "more laws".

Ya know,

When I got back home, I was kind of curious if anyone from the board was there. I know people do pop in from time to time. I wouldn't have surprised me if someone made a post about the grumpy guy they ran into at the Post.

Good job. As much as I like the open style of KTP, I would not mind an 18+ age limit or requirement for parent or guardian in the firearm room. Forum members may remember my post a few months back about a small problem I had with a KTP firearm sales guy that was displeased when I asked him to open the action on a pistol before handing it to me...

There is zero room for error with firearms. Firearms are not toys.

Totally agree! Either know the 4 rules and follow them ALWAYS and to the letter, or don't handle guns.

I definetly thin basic gun safty should be taught in schools. From the basic Eddie Eagle stuff (Stop, Don't Touch, Find an Adult) to the 4 rules. No need to handle guns, or show care and feeding...or even the basic mechanics of cartridges and guns (though that is also very usefull).

All these Negligent discharges. Lots of them are from people who should know better....but many are from people doing dumb things with guns that they think are ok.

Also this might help with some of the needless goblin deaths. One of the big things gun safty teaches is respect for the weapon. A gun is a serious thing. I would think somebody who knows this would be less likely to waive around an airsoft in people's faces.

There is no panacea, but it couldn't hurt anything!

I think you did the correct thing! I probably would have done the same.

I was watching one of those "Cops" type shows the other day and a guy had gone to one gun shop and bought ammo for a .357 and then went to another gun shop and asked to look at the .357s. The clerk handed him a nice .357 revolver and the the guy had it loaded and chambered before the clerk new what was going on. He prompltly held up the store, stole a bunch of other guns and ammo as well as all the money. Luckily the clerk was not hurt...

Too bad you couldn't show them this picture. Poor muzzle discipline, among other things.

Warning! The picture is EXTREMELY graphic.

OUCH--thats gotta hurt!

Seriously, I'm sure I would have done the same thing, good for you. Years ago I was driving down the road and went by a group of kids, several boys were throwing rocks at a group of girls running down the road, well I turned around promptly, got out of my car and gave them an ear full.
Maybe KTP should have a sign that has the basic rules for the boneheads.

Howinhell did he blow the hell out of his foot like that, anyway? [thinking]

Poor muzzle discipline I'd say. Lot's of reconstructive surgery ahead for the guy. Lot's of PT too. Still, he'll never walk normally again.

If you didn't step in, there is a chance the kid would have turned around and smacked his face into the barrel and put KTP in the news, resulting in every longarm in the store being stored behind a counter or chained to the racks.

Good job! It's stupid and irresponisble kids that give others a bad rap. Hopefully a few pairs of panties had to be tossed after that episode. I completely agree that ANY minor in that area must be under adult supervision. Still no gaurantee it'll eliminate stupid stuff as this, but less likely I'd think.
I know when I go and have my 4yo son, he's pretty much tethered to my leg. If I'm not having a firearm in my hands, I'm holding onto his. He's under directions to not touch anything w/o asking first. At least he'll ask. He listens and follows these direction very well too. No incidents, mishaps or scoldings yet. Heck ask him, and he'll tell you guns are'nt to be touched and all that safety stuff. If he asks, which he infrequently does, about a gun, time is taken to show and explain it, sometimes in a hands on manner but always re-enforcing the safety rules.
I'm wondering if after this episode KTP will try and watch "idiots" more closely.
