Finally picked up a Krag. Saw this one at the LGS where I got the SVT and went back the next week to get it.
Its an 1898 rifle semi-sporterized but really well done IMO, looks like a carbine but isn't. Whoever cut the stock did such a good job that it doesn't even look like it was shortened. Only took a few inches off the barrel and added a 1903 type front sight with a Lyman blade w/white bead. They removed the top guard, rear sights, and cutoff and added a Marbles #20 peep sight which I REALLY like.
Otherwise its intact other than some sanding of the stock, unfortunately. The inspector cartouche is not visible, only part of the box around it, but the proof mark is there at least. And the wood is absolutely beautiful which is what caught my eye to begin with. A bit of a surface crack at the butt end on either side, looks to be from dryness I think but doesn't go all the way thru. I'll look into getting it professionally filled.
The metal needed cleaning to remove some light rust here and there but it cleaned up nicely with 0000 steel wool and CLP/penetrating oil mix.
The bore was the other thing that attracted me, it was nice and bright with strong rifling. No problems at all in there and the bolt was in great shape as well. Got her all cleaned & lubed and out to the range last friday and couldn't believe how accurate it was. This thing is a tack driver at 100 yards with standard factory remington & winchester ammo. Can't wait to try some reloads.
Now the pics...
