How might one go about using that defensively? Intuitively I imagine more stabbing motions than slashing like that design suggests.It's meant for self defense, not looking pretty.

It's intended for slashing mostly. Much the the Karambit's, which are intended for locking up and slashing limbs. Nasty, nasty results.
Its definitely a slasher, made for undercover cops or so Spyderco says, could just be marketing.
In the same family, this is my favorite. Truly rust-proof blade.
Many trainers discourage stabbing in self-defense, in part because while eventually lethal, by the time your attacker realizes he is mortally wounded, so are you.
No one wins a knife fight. One dies on the sidewalk, the other dies on the way to the hospital.
