This was posted in a private jewelers Facebook group. I guess if the police need to respond to a holdup in progress at Kay's they'll need to arm themselves with super-soakers or something.

Iredell County Sheriff

The Iredell County Sheriffs Office, along with Sheriff Darren Campbell, are deeply saddened at a situation involving a fellow deputy yesterday in Statesville.

A uniformed deputy, while on his lunch break, was notified the engagement ring he had purchased for his upcoming wedding proposal, had been sized and was ready for him to pick up at Kay Jewelers located on Turnersburg Highway in Statesville.

The deputy took his meal break to pick up the ring, and was met at the door by the store manager, who informed him he was not allowed to wear his service weapon while on their premises.

The deputy informed the manager he was in uniform and his marked patrol car was in the parking lot, and it would be a violation of policy for him to remove his service weapon while in uniform.

This policy is in place for not only the safety of the deputy, but the general public as well. The manager stated our deputy would need to return to the store at a different time when he was not armed. The deputy left the store, without the ring he had purchased.

The reaction our deputy encountered is very difficult for us to comprehend, and we earnestly hope situations such as these are few and are diminishing.

Thank you to the citizens and businesses in our area who whole heartily support the men and women who wear the badge.

Sheriff Campbell has attempted to contact their corporate office numerous times, but as of yet has received no answer.

Campbell said he has attempted to contact the store's corporate office numerous times but has not yet received a direct response.

A company spokesperson for Kay Jewelers, David Bouffard, responded to the Sheriff's Office's post, stating that the company is "reaching out to the customer and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office to sincerely apologize for the mishandling of this matter."

The company further stated, "We have tremendous respect for law enforcement, and we thank the Office for bringing this to our attention. We will be sure to reinforce store training regarding our firearm policy with specific regard to uniformed law enforcement."

the sad thing is Kay and most of the rest of the retail jewelers are owned by the same company.... more reason to shop a trusted local jeweler

Signet Jewelers Limited is the world's largest retailer of diamond jewelry. Signet operates over 3,500 stores primarily under the name brands of Kay Jewelers, Zales, Jared The Galleria Of Jewelry, H.Samuel, Ernest Jones, Peoples, Piercing Pagoda, and JamesAllen.com.

Not gonna lie, I was nervous walking around Downtown Crossing with my wife's engagement diamond. I always carry in Boston anyways though so that day was no different, of course.
We need to treat everyday and every environment the same friend.

The word is that Kays is in trouble. I can't see how refusing cops will help in any way.

The group was founded in 1949 and grew organically before expanding rapidly through a series of acquisitions in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was formerly known as the Ratner Group.

Gerald Ratner who built it from 130 stores to 2500, a previous CEO, made possibly the most famous gaffe in twentieth-century British business when he explained to a major business conference that the reason why one of his products was so cheap was that it was "total crap". He then went on to unfavourably compare some of the company's earrings with a 99p prawn sandwich. His remarks were gleefully reported by the media. The company lost over 500 million pounds off its share price and consumers subsequently avoided the Ratner branded stores, nearly 300 of which were closed between January 1992 and May 1994 as the group went through a financial restructuring. Ratner resigned in November 1992 and the group changed its name to Signet Group plc in September 1993.

This perceived lack of judgement and contempt for the customer gave rise to the expression "doing a Ratner".
