Just a sucker for old rifles, I guess. I couldn't leave this uncommon one behind for $330 OTD.
This 1893 Erfurt Kar. 88. Commission Carbine has received the chamber throat modification to accept the 8X57JS (spitzer), as is designated by the S-stamp on the receiver ring. Not sure what the pounding marks are all about on the top of the ring and rear of the barrel sleeve? Doesn't appear to be an attempt to deface the crest?
And it looks like bubba had long ago ground down the ears to the nosecap/sight protector. Why? Why? Why!
All metal is matching, inside and out, to serial number 7773 (73 on small parts). But the stock is obviously not original, numbered in the barrel channel as 7780. I forgot to take that picture when it was apart.
The receiver and butter knife handled bolt are still in the white, with a moderate patina. The bluing on the barrel sleeve is still 75% or better. The stock cartouches have worn down from handling.
Never intended to be a front line weapon, and served support roles through WWI, but overall a neat little carbine. I am happy to find one.
Many pics, and thanks for looking.
