I was taking a shower and had my back to the faucet. I thought the pressure was dropping and turned around to see solid brown water coming out. There is a bunch of rusty sand in the tub now too. I have town water and nothing in my house is leaking. It’s also both hot and cold so I’m ruling out the water heater.
It’s too late to check with the neighbors so it looks like I have no water for the night.

    Local water main issue?

I've always seen brown water when a main is disturbed... assuming you are correct that it's not your water heater

Going to want to flush your water heater once the cold water comes in clear.

How well do you know the pipes in your house? See how direct a feed you have coming from the street to say an outside faucet - and then go turn on the outside faucet and see what comes out.

That will tell you whether or not it's something in your house or something in the town pipes.

I wouldn't rule it out. I've seen my water go brown from pipe flushing at some oddball times. Could be a pipe burst somewhere or they're flushing pipes (or were flushing pipes) - and the smeg just took a while to work it's way thru the pipes to you.

I'd run an outside faucet for a while and see what happens.

Call the non-emergency dispatch number at your local PD. They have 24x7 contacts for operatives in all of the town public works departments.

Sometimes maintenance is done in the off hours to avoid impacting businesses and prime time for residents. That's why you occasionally have very short power or internet outages at o'dark thirty.

It's not uncommon to flush hydrants at night. That way the least number of people get the brown water.

Remove all aerators and showerheads before you turn on the water.

Yup, this should include the water supply lines to the washing machine, too.

Get a filter on the main asap. Unless you have really, really old plumbing, the ballcocks on W/Cs and the porcelain seats of faucet valves will be ruined by the sand and other shit being introduced.

Where my wife grew up the Fire Chief got called in front of the town to explain why the tank truck was being used to fill his pool the previous weekend.

Years ago a fire tank truck showed to fill a pond that had been dug as a prop for a match at Harvard. The pit was dug in the sand and lined with plastic.

That is a mutual arrangement in some communities as a potential future draft source if there is no municipal water system.

Yes that’s when they do it. Less traffic to deal with and less water demand. The city I work in flushes hydrants 9:30p-5:30a.

Time for a whole house filter and my town usually does all hydrant flushing at night. I am at the end of a line and my filters last only about a month.

    This.

Your hot water tank will collect the sand as well in the bottom.

Everything was back to normal this morning. Last night I noticed my neighbor ran his hose into his driveway and it ran down the street. I watered my flowers last night before going to bed and this morning it ran clear.

I did clean out my aerators in the faucets.
