Jury reaches verdict in killing of Kate Steinle on Pier 14 in San Francisco

A San Francisco jury reached a verdict Thursday afternoon in the trial of a homeless undocumented immigrant in the fatal shooting of Kate Steinle as she strolled with her father on Pier 14 to take in a view of San Francisco Bay.

The jury was expected to issue the verdict at about 4 p.m. after several days of deliberations.

My guess... Guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

He was 90-95 feet away when he pulled the trigger 3 times.

He did not mean to kill her.

Bullet ricocheted and hit her in the back.

The killer does not deserve to live but I don't think he will be convicted of murder.

He was a poor homeless illegal in San Francisco. People in California love that, and evidently the people on the jury were no exception. And I'd be the judge was awfully accommodating throughout the trial and in the jury instructions. Regardless of what anyone tells you, bias exists in courts, and in spades.

But you're also likely correct. I doubt the prosecutor tried in the same manner as they would have had it been a legal gun owner on trial for a victimless crime.

Completely disgusted - Does the shooter get to stay now, with a permanent disability check for the trauma of trial? Does the Federal Agent get charged for providing (he lost it I guess) the gun?

The prosecutor didn't want to win, I'm sure if it was a licensed gun owner without a bullet button he would have gone for the death penalty.

This is how you get the bubba effect. Why call the cops and go through the whole trial if the guy can confess he found the gun and pulled the trigger and still get off. He says he was on sleeping pills = diminished capacity, but when drunk and you kill someone you don't get to skate because of it do you?

The prosecutor should have to work to get a conviction. This one didn’t.

I blame the jury from the standpoint of a guy that knows firearms. But if this jury didn’t? Then the defense attorney did the better job with a trigger-pull argument, and the prosecutor should have been able to deal with that.
