Holy chit, that is a pretty big fire!

A few of my commuting choices take me past Breakheart and/or Lynn Woods. I've been huffing brushfire smoke for a week every time I drive past.

Breakheart caught fire today, within sight of Water St, just as I was rolling by. Thursday's rain can't come soon enough.

It hopped the ridge this afternoon. Butternut is running their snow guns to try and save their equipment.

Butternut fire

The Butternut Fire, a wildfire in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, has been burning for several days, consuming over 1,100 acres of land in East Mountain State Forest. Here’s a summary of the situation:

  • Cause: Human activity, likely an abandoned campfire or illegal burn, with a possible ignition source.
  • Spread: The fire has spread rapidly, with a rate of 60 feet per hour, due to dry conditions and challenging terrain.
  • Containment: Firefighters have been working to contain the fire, using a helicopter to scoop water from a snowmaking pond at Butternut Ski Area. Additional resources from surrounding communities and state agencies have been called in to assist.
  • Safety: While the fire poses no immediate threat to public property, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and avoid the area.
  • Extinguishment: Due to the difficult terrain and fuel load on the forest floor, it’s unlikely the fire will be fully extinguished until winter, when rainfall becomes more consistent.

Key Quotes:

  • “There is another factor that influences fire behavior in that you have to have an ignition source,” said Dave Celino, Chief Fire Warden for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. “We have not had any thunderstorm development in October or November with lightning. We know that all of these fires are human-caused fires.”
  • “Crews are working diligently to control the spread of the fire, and we are grateful for the support from neighboring fire departments, state agencies, and specialized teams,” said Scott Turner, Great Barrington Fire Chief.

Great Barrington wildfire is 'zero percent' contained. 'This one's going to be tough,' fire officials say

I have a cousin on Division Street, near the Alford Brook.
