Was driving home from Grocery shopping heading over the French King bridge on Rt 2 from Gill to Erving (where I live) when my better half said: "What the hell is that guy doing!".

I looked over and a Teenager/Young man in a Black shirt and Red shorts was on the other side of the guard railing. Then He LEPT OFF!!

I pulled over on the Erving side of the bridge and called 911, which transferred me to the Erving Police. Gave a description and my name etc.
As I walked back over to the Gill side I saw the guy in the water, he was moving but appeared to be disorientated and he fell down when he tried to stand up. Erving police showed up, I pointed out that the guy was alive and in the water. I stayed for another ten minutes and a Northfield LEO took down more info from me. A minute or two later they asked for people who were gathering on the bridge to move along.

My wife and I were the only ones who witnessed it. She stayed in the van with my son and was relieved that the guy was alive.

Pictures on the guy in the water:

(Phone memory was full after that.)

Just heard as of 2:20pm jumper had broken legs and broken back. Life flight is transporting him now.

Damn that sucks that this person chose to do that, but yet I commend him for only doing it to himself and not being a coward and hurting others! Oh by the way OP I hope you didn't have children in the car because that would be really hard to explain to a five and three year old like we have.

Not even a hot day to take a plunge in the river like that.
You have to be really disturbed to take a leap like that. I witnessed a hit & run when I was a kid. The lady bounced of the car front right quarter pannel like a soccer ball. She landed good 10 feet back. I still see that image in my head many years later.

Been a number of jumpers off that bridge over the years, including Denny Jones, the scion of the Jones family who owned (and own) much of Amherst. I fish around there a lot, especially up by the French King rock. I'm always leery of being under the bridge because idiots throw stuff at you.

He survived. We (Gill) along with Turners boat were there. That's the second jumper in a row that has survived the fall. Been on my share of rescue/recovery.

That happens a lot right there, probably every other month.. what I don't understand is why they don't aim for that little road that follows the river, that's guaranteed death. the water seems more like a 50/50 shot.

Some people just give up. That's the way it is folks. Glad he just tried to take himself out and left everyone else alone.

Wow I drove on that bridge a bunch of times and even stoped in the fall to take pics of the foliage. The pics don't do it justice to how high it really is, thats a long drop for sure.

With a broken back he might be luckier if he were dead. He's clearly not paralyzed but it is going to be a lifetime of pain and disability.

Tough to say. I have a friend who got hit by a car and broke his back in what I assume is in a similar fashion. He's never been the same. It happened in his early 20's. But yes, it does appear he already has a major intellectual disability.

I broke my T6 vertebrae and now a big chunk of it is missing. I never knew I did it and found out about it after having x-rays prior to a completely unrelated surgery. I've also had 3 lumbar surgeries. None of that gives me any problems and I still toss heavy stuff around, mt bike and cross country ski. It's a crap shoot. No plans to jump off of any bridges... I'm pretty sure the gravity is still on. [wink]
