How can IRAN cause US energy blackouts at will? I don't get it? It's not like they have their own ON / OFF switch
From the things I've read, the cause of the NYC blackout was someone inside ConEd facilities had used a physical device (USB drive most likely) to upload a virus to the electricity control systems. The reason it took 6 hours was because ConEd had to disconnect the computers and servers and replace them with unaffected units and reboot.

It's speculated there was a sleeper agent who is a ConEd employee who did the deed.

I just figure if there's any similar, large scale attack on the grid, it'll be this weekend due to extreme and dangerous heat.

It happened with Argentina, no reason it can't happen again, but I have a feeling any attack on UK forces would cause the UK to invoke NATO articles and the US would eventually be involved, but possibly with only air and sea forces.

I don't see Trump committing vast amounts of ground forces to the region, not when Iran is in possession of chemical, biological, and radiological weapons (possibly even low power nuclear weapons) and appears to have every intent on using them.

The mission parameters that have become clear the past month or two with Iran is some sort of "no fly zone" but more like a "no ship zone." Basically, whenever any of their vessels come within a certain distance of an oil tanker or other non-military maritime vessel that is not in distress, the Iranian ships will be sunk.

Same thing with their planes, they had a drone come within 1000 yards of a USN ship and the ship was forced to shoot it down.

If the Iranians don't like those rules... that's tough. There's absolutely no reason why any non-military vessel sailing in Int'l waters needs to be seized by Iran.

one thing is for sure, if there IS a UK/EU war with Iran, you can bet your bottom dollar US and Israeli bombers will make short work out of any nuclear development facilities in the first week of fighting

A spy causing damage to the grid, hacking a power plant and halting generators, shorting a transformer...there are many ways they could cause a blackout. The power grid is pretty damned fragile. In 2003, a simple power overload caused a blackout in the northeast US and parts of Canada, affecting over 50,000,000 people.

I've got no problem with the US AFSOC, or USN, providing a lift for a couple of SAS units, and sharing Intel. Beyond that, not interested.

Shouldn't have been a surprise to the Brits. Iran threatened to take a British tanker after the British captured the Iranian tanker last week. Heads on a swivel after that. Unless the British are arrogant enough to believe they are still a world power.

Why would they think war with Iran would keep Trump from getting reelected?
Agreed on the approach though.
I think Iran is going to have to start executing Brits on YouTube before Trump could have the Green Light for action. Iraq and Afghanistan are still fresh.

I think the Eisenhower Interstate Highway Act is an excellent model for replacing the fragile, antiquated power grid we have now. Sooner or later, some bad actor with laptop is going to put a big hurt on us. Applying modern cybersecurity and robust, fault-tolerant distribution should be a non-partisan issue. And, Trump could attach his brand to it.

Nah, some guy whose job was to monitor the blinkenzeelights for problems was bored, brought in a USB drive of porn to while away the time while he waited for the shift to end and the rest is history. Time to disable the autorun feature on windows.

Yeah, Obama tried that with the cost more than the entire Iraq War American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 'stimulus' bill. We got a bunch of highway signs advertising the ARRA and state employees got sweet bonuses, that's about it.

We could probably cut demand for electricity generation in half by upgrading the grid to superconductors and modern highly insulated lines such that long distance transmission losses are halved. But that would require congress critters and industry to not be a bunch of grifters.

If there are Windows machines controlling the power grid, we're as good as back in the stone age. There's probably been more $$ of
GDP lost from virus infested Windows machines than anyone knows.

It'll be a lot of people's problem when a mere couple decades from now the UK and France are majority Muslim nations thanks to immigration, which are two of the eight confirmed nations of the world with nuclear weapons.
Don't forget Jeff, the other one with nukes.
