intrigued by certain guns

I am a sucker for everything with a trigger on it, and lusted over many types of firearms since I was 15 years old.
I have also been blessed to be in a financial position to able to obtain those firearms.

I am blessed to have seen some of Patron's toys at the range. He has excellent taste!

:)

I think the one 'impractical' gun on my list is the same as OP's- .45-70 lever gun. Now that Henry has a side gate version, I might go for one of those as Henry actions are generally much smoother than Marlin actions.

Like 90% of the guns I own.
Except I shoot them more than 10 times.

But I do have a few I purchased and never shot, a bunch of Mausers and I still need to reload for the 357 Maximum.

If you have time, the 45/70 is an excellent cartridge to cast for. You can go with 300 grain bullets or 700 grains and everything in between. All the shapes you can think of. You can load it as a pleasant plinking rifle or a rifle that will dislocate your shoulder.

The 45/70 is an awesome cartridge to reload, and it is very easy to reload being straight walled.

It loves Black powder more than Smokeless, but if going smokeless use IMR 4198 or try 5744.

PS: Don't be afraid of black powder in a lever action. There are plenty of videos of people that shoot BP Cowboy Action showing how they clean their lever actions, it is not as hard as you might think and the gun won't rust as long as you clean it the same day.

I can send you pictures of rifles I own that only shoot BP loaded ammo and they look brand new.

And reloading BP is easier than smokeless and safer as long as the bullet is touching the powder.
@Broc - have you tried the BP substitutes? I would clean them anyway but little to no risk of corrosion from those. No clue if good for .45-70.
In my opinion there is no need for a #1 in 6.5cm.

The #1 is a 100 yard, maybe 150 heavy hitting gun. The gun you load to kill 3 polar bears next to each other.

The #1 should be in Safari rifle cartridges.

Ruger has made some sh*t desicions, like totally f*ck up their production of 480 revolvers, and mess with the #1 in heavy calibers.

CZ seems to be learning from Ruger and thinking that is a good idea.

So sad.

Edit: I could see a #1 in 6.5cm being useful in the woods of NE where you would be lucky to shoot more than 50 yards, there is something about shooting a single shot that is just so much better than "modern" rifles. But there are so many other calibers that might be better for short ranges.

Depends on the version of No. 1. The heavy barreled No. 1's can hang with anything in terms of accuracy. The most accurate shooter I had ever seen at my club was shooting cast from a No. 1. I forget the caliber but he was loading via breech method like the Schuetzen guys- bullet lightly seated in lands, case loaded next. Kapok filler was used to hold the powder in the bullet-less case. SOB was pissed if his groups were not smaller than ~.375" at 100 yards. :D

I tried one once in a musket. It worked, I thought it was sh*t.

I read in BPCR forums that powders like Pyrodex work like sh*t for single shot (when compared with BP).

Not sure how they would perform in a lever action. But in that case, you might as well go with smokeless.

If someone is super lazy and can't spend 5 minutes wiping down the gun after use (I usually do it at the range), then I recommend that person stay away from BP. It is not a good idea to let it sit overnight or for weeks.

I met a bunch of people that shoot that way, incredible how accurate those guns were.

I have a number of items I refer to as part of my novelty collection. They're just really cool and I couldn't pass them up.

I'm an opportunist. If I see something I like and I can get it at a decent price, I'll buy it. I had great luck at Riley's over the years. I bought my first gun there in 1989. I picked up an hk p7m8 for $900. Box, paperwork and 3 original magazines. I picked up this prewar high-power and S&W model 3. Also this S&W model 34. IMG_0282.JPG IMG_0061.JPG IMG_0071.JPG

Really like the Charter Arms Professional... 7 shot, 32H&R Mag. Can also shoot 32Long and 32S&W. Not particularly practical and all 3 cartridges it takes are not cheap and probably hard to find... still want one :)

Yup. I buy them too. Currently looking for a Savage 1907 pistol and a Charter Arms Bulldog 44. I’ll carry the bulldog but the Savage will be a safe queen.

So why those? I only ask because they're not super common, and are featured in a couple of cool movies. I also tend to collect guns from movies I like.

For me, I'd like to get a Ladies Home Companion and a Mateba Unica (preferably in 44 mag). My other big one was a Galil ARM in .308, but I just got one of those last month.

Pawn Shops in the south.. 3 kinds. 1st kind is just one that sells random junk almost like a yard sale. The 2nd one has random junk and just new guns. The 3rd one is my favorite it has new and used guns and everything of my interest. I have a strange fascination with “hood guns” they have plenty of .22 and other assorted Saturday night specials.

.25 ammo is hard to find down here $$$. I’m thinking about getting a .22 Jennings or some other ring of fire gun just to shoot for no reason at this pawn shop

I suppose the Savage because it’s innovative and really never got the attention and distribution it deserved. @EddieCoyle wrote some amazing stuff on it.

Regarding the Bulldog, years ago there was a guy named Don Perkins, for whom the pistol house at Fall River Rod and gun is named. He was like a local version of Colonel Jeff Cooper. He carried a Colt 1911, because what else? The only other weapon he carried was a Charter Arms Bulldog. I skipped my college classes often to go and hang with him and I learned more from those talks than I ever did in college. I was very fortunate to be able to get to know this man. Maybe it’s a lingering bit of admiration and respect for him, I couldn’t say but I do know that’s a badass little revolver.

Only a jackass would own guns with little practical value. Now leave me alone so I can finish another SBR app.
Define "pratical value" I've owned a SBS Sagia in 12 gauge (still kicking myself for selling) a 4" S&W500,and have a Colt Govt.45, A Hi power in 9mm, A Kimber Micto 9mm, a Colt mustang in .380. and four Naa's. One inch barrel .22lr,in my hat, the others in .22 Magnum and a BondArms derringer in 410. I'm currently bidding on a S&W 29 In .44 magnum.

"Practical" is relative and subjective. I've got as gun for every occasion, and I always have one or two on me.
Not being the interweb tough guy. Disabled 100%, senior citizen. Can't fight anymore, can't walk, let alone run.

I pretty much own all the guns I've ever wanted, with just a few exceptions.
One of these days I'll buy a Luger. It doesn't matter if it's a matching numbers gun or if it's pristine. Just an unmolested shootable gun.
I also plan to find a Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless is a .32 ACP.
And lastly I'd like a Korth revolver.
Those are my 3 bucket list guns. Do I need them? Hell no. Will I buy them? Hell yes.

Mauser Broomhandle and a Walther ppk.
Another 22 target rifle. I have a dozen or so.
Oh yesh, I got the mauser. My local shop has an Interarms era ppk. I will probably end up with it for no reason other than Bond, James Bond.

You're like Mad Max in Thunderdome, where he gives up like fifteen different weapons. Yet still holds on to his flyswatter knife.

I love my Colt 1903. My wife loves it too. It’s my absolute favorite carry piece. Made in 1919. Mind you, I only wear it when I’m at lodge in a tuxedo but a gentleman must have standards.

anyone ever lusted after a firearm they had no use for? something they wanted really bad and had no business buying cause they'd probably shoot 10 or so rounds thru it and put it away. yeah, i know, we all got a safe full of them. well mine is, and has been for a while, is one of those marlin lever 45/70 trappers. i'm not fond of stainless, needs to be the blued one with 16.10" bbl they put out some time ago.

have no clue what i'd do with it besides fondle it and blast targets, but it's so damn cool. i think so anyway.
That's basically the world of milsurps.... they really have no practical real-world use but it's still awfully fun to buy and collect them.
