LOGIC 101

An interesting letter in the Australian Shooter Magazine this week:

"If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the
Iraq theater of operations during the past 22 months and a total of 2112
deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington, DC is 80.6 per 100,000 people for the same
period.

That means you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S.
capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the U.S., than
you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington!"

Math fail.

2112 deaths / 160,000 troops = 1320 deaths per 100,000 troops

The fail comes in because the author divided the Iraq death rate by 22 months to get 60 deaths per 100,000 soldiers [PER MONTH], but did not perform the same division on the DC figure. 80.6/22 = 3.66, so the rate for DC is 3.66 deaths per 100,000 residents per month.

3.66 < 60

Apples != Oranges

Oh , there you go with that tricky math stuff again.... Next you'll try to use science to say the Sun dosen't revolve around the Earth, Blasphemer!!
