A man who tried to rob an armored truck guard Friday morning in the Humboldt Park neighborhood was charged with the murder of his accomplice, who was shot dead by one of the guards, police said.

>snip<

One of the guards from Garda armored cars had just made a pick-up at the Family Dollar store, 3401 W. Chicago. He was walking back to his truck, parked in front, when the two armed men approached at about 9:45 a.m., police said.

One man walked up to the guard, put an apparent sawed-off shotgun under his chin, and said, “Don’t move.” Another man approached from the rear, put the guard in a chokehold and stuck a small revolver in his back, said Chicago Police Commander Anthony Riccio.

“Then the guard hears the guy from behind say, ‘Kill him.’.....

dollar store is often visited by people with low income = all cash no credit cards. A dollar store works on small profits so most likely they only pay for one armored car pickup per week or maybe even every other week. A grocery store may do 10 times the amount of business however 90 percent of their sales are debit or credit or check. Plus grocery stores make daily or multiple deposits per week so actual cash amounts will be lower. it's easier to spend a bag full of 20's 10's 5's and dollar bills then it is to be breaking hundred dollar bills all over the city or having to launder it at a casino or other source.

barber shops, convienence stores, liquor stores, coffe shops and parking and garage booth attendants are easy cash targets.....

Why do people rob banks... I forget what famous robber said it but his answer was "That's where they keep the money!"

Good for them. On a side note why would you rob him coming out of a Dollar Store?

I work for FD in MA, and im surprised it doesnt happen all the time. Garda services the Dorchester stores and they really do not pay attention to their surroundings and they may handle upwards of 10k some days. Glad these guys had their wits about them and the perps are dead as a warning to the next idiots up to bat. Thankfully I dont have to drive into Dorchester anymore and worry about being there on the wrong day.

lol that is a stereotype there.. Crimes can happen anywhere. If crimes only happening only in dorchester i guess fbi, atf, local police, state police will do their job easier.. lol

I worked as a guard for an armored carrier for awhile. You wouldn't believe the amount of money I would pick up on a DAILY basis from supermarkets. More then the dollar store probably made in a month.

No, but those are pretty much the only stores we have in MA that we use armored car services for on a daily basis. But I would agree, I see shadier characters frequent the Gloucester and Beverly stores, lately the crackheads have been coming out of the woodwork in droves.

Those guys pulled off some steller shots under pressure... Bravo... I mean realy, Headshots ?!? Why do I have the feeling thats not SOP ? lol

more and more I see the driver of these cars texting or surfing the web (maybe NES?) on their PDA while waiting for the runner. good for these guys for watching out for each other

It was Family Dollar, not a dollar store. Not singles they were picking up.

I spent almost 3 years doing armored car after I left the Army. Still can't believe we never got robbed. You'd be shocked at how much money moves from one place to another every day.

Not truly a stereotype , but merely a statistic. Crimes can happen anywhere but more likely in high crime areas like Dorchester... See link type in Dorchester and it brings you to a big map of Dorchester crimes in last 30 days. Obviously crime happens everywhere but let's be real about it

Another shock to investigators: “The shotgun was fake,” Riccio said. “It was two pipes taped together with electrical tape. I saw it. It looked very good. But the revolver was real.”

probably a good thing, otherwise the BG might of got off a shot with the scattergun when the guard pulled his weapon and shot him

Nice work by the guards. The drop down move was clever.

Actually, it's fairly standard technique but is generally effective only if you are with another armed individual who can take advantage of the opening it created. Fortunately, his partner didn't freeze or become paralyzed by fear of the system.

Story said:
“And this all happened underneath a police camera,” Riccio said. “But it was actually watching a drug deal go down a little further west on Chicago Avenue. Once the officers monitoring the camera heard this was happening, they zoomed in.”
[angry]

Anyone else catch that?

Fail of failure failing...

So, not only do we have a fine demonstration of the police cannot stop YOUR attackers - we have them distracted from violent crime watching the "war on drugs."

two head shots!

+1

What the camera saw was the escape attempt of the man who was shot in the eye as he stumbled and crawled down the sidewalk. He only made it a few feet.

boom. headshot.

good on the guards, i think they are rethinking this whole $12/hr bit though. i'd be at home with a bottle of scotch cruising monster.com after a day like that.

I'd just like to see the resume. Under "skills and experience that may help you in your new position", how do you word "shot a bad guy through the eye"? [mg]

Good job to both of them for getting it done when it really counted. Nothing beats having a partner you can trust.

I almost picked up a job with an armored company right out of college. The three things that made me pass were: the hour drive to work, being told "we pay $11/hr, and you will work 40-60 hours a week, mandatory over time, no over time pay" (apparently they are exempt?) and my favorite "not to scare you off, but we had two drivers from another office get killed last month." Thanks, but I think I can do better. Good work on the part of these two.
