What are you waiting for!?! [smile] I took my Savage 93R17 out to the range yesterday.

I filled some aluminum cans right to the top with water so they were overfilled at 100 yards and set them on the back stop. When that little bullet going over 2500 FPS hits a can holding that much water, the resulting pressure is pretty cool.

If you look closely at this shot you can see the entrance hole right above where the bullet is pointing.

Its not nearly as powerful and explosive as the Ruger 204 when that thing hits a can of water, but its still a blast to shoot. [smile]

How much are a box of those things?

$10 from Four Seasons for 50 rounds of CCI V-Max. You can get hollow points that do a bit more damage for pretty cheap at Wal Mart, but the V-Max has the polymer tip and is more accurate.

Not as expensive as I thought! Great, thanks alot, that's all I needed to hear -- about the time I'm beginning to realize that maybe buying this SKS to just "throw into the safe" until I needed it might not quite work out that way, and that this high power long gun thing is fun, and addictive. [crying]

i always wondered...what the hell do you use to clean the barrel of one of those??? pipe cleaners??? i barely clean my 10/22 cuz i cant be bothered jamming the tiny tags down the barrel

oh and by the way....17hmr is a GREAT caliber for coyote

Bore snakes work well IMO.

I have a ball bearing cleaning rod, brushes, mops, etc. all made specifically for 17. I heard that the pistol brushes are best because they don't take as much force to push through the chamber. The jags and patches are so tiny they're almost, dare I say... cute. [laugh]
I also have a Bore Snake in 17 that I use when I haven't shot many rounds through mine.

thats really the only thing that held me back from getting one...i didnt need another PITA gun to clean...when i worked at galyans i had one of the savage 93r17's all settup with a nice scope and wood stock i was gonna buy for something ridiculous like $180 but never did...wish i had

I bought a nice coated Dewey Rod for it, along with the guide for it.

What is the difference between .22 and .17? I've ignored .17 because I figure that .22 is the cheapest, and the difference in performance and/or comfort between the two can't be that significant. But, in reality I am totally ignorant about the .17rimfire cartridge.

The .17 xxx is the .17 Mach 2, which is comparable to the .22lr, whereas the .17HMR is comparable to the .22 magnum. I believe it's the same casing for the .22 magnum, but the smaller bullet. It's meant primarily for varmint use, I believe.

The biggets thing I notice people shooting 17HMR for is target accuracy, but a lot do use it for varmint.
The Ruger 204 on the other hand which looks like a 223 round with a slightly smaller bullet out performs the 17HMR in both varmint hunting and target shooting. I belive its the fastest round made today coming in at around 4000 FPS. Ammo for it is a bit more expensive at around $10 for 20 rounds, but it is a centerfire cartridge and can be reloaded. Plus when I shoot cans filled with water with my 204 they literally make a vapor cloud of water that looks like youre shooting rocks. I once shot a full Jolt soda can and all that was left was the lower half of the can standing up exactly where I put it with a little water in it. We couldn't find much of the top half, just pieces here and there.[smile] The dealer I bought the rifle from was an ex sniper and said he was considering on making a sniper rifle using the Ruger 204 action.

You don't think it's a little light for coyote? Porcupine; Yes. Woodchuck; Yes. Coyote and fox? I think I'd rather have a centerfire.
