What would it be?
Target..........hunting..........self defense.............It's gotta cover those three uses.

You can tell I've haven't got much going on so far today........

I'm gonna add another vote for .308

Extremely versatile, plenty of power, loads for almost any occasion, manageable recoil.

hehehe, I'm suprised that someone didn't already say it.

.338 Lapua. Just kidding, I'm going to go witht the .44-40 or .45-70.

But I'm going to agree with the .308

Then, if you have a Para and the Mec-Tec carbine kit, or the Beretta Storm, then I'll agree with the .45

While I've grown to love the .308 / 7.62 NATO (Yes, they're technically two different cartridges), I'd have to go with the .30-06 if it were really my only rifle. It's readily available with heavy loads for big game at the upper end, and sabot-loaded varmint rounds at the other end.

Isn't a .308 or .30-06 a little overkill for a zombie ???

Is there really such a thing as overkill? [twisted]

You mean like using an sledgehammer to kill a housefly?

Sometimes it just makes you feel better to do that. [twisted]

As a friend of mine often reminds the more sensitive in the group, there are very few problems in life that can't be solved by the proper application of high explosives. [wink]

.338 Lapua.

Since you didn't say what you were hunting, I'll say it.

Actually, though, 308 would be my preference, in an M-14 or FAL.

30-06 in a Garand, or 7.62x54R in a Dragunov would work also.

I was referring to 338 Lapua Mag, and I'm eventually building one, on a Rem 700 action.

And IMNSHO, that guy had 2 cartridges too many. First, the 280 will do nothing that 30-06 won't do. Secondly, why bother with a 375 H&H and a 458 Lott. Either will do.

Know what caliber has killed the most elephants? 303 British. Not because it's good, but because it's what the natives have.
