Sort of as a sidebar concerning emergency water: Tie your emergency water supply (in the form of holding tanks) into your regular supply.

Do it In such a way that you are constantly cycling fresh water into your "emergency" holding tanks. Thus, when the SHTF (or when your power is knocked out), you will have fresh water without any additional maintenance required.
