The right place right time r2 (2).jpg

I was in the right spot at the right time for this.

I hope they never get used though.

Can anybody guess where I'm standing?

and the flag is attached to the railing of the item I'm standing on, the guy is not holding it.

Cool, been to that museum and did the Nautilus tour. Was pretty cool, especially for free. I can't get the

I like to hit the Mystic Seaport too which is close to Groton but that's not free. Same with the Mystic Aquarium but it's not as big as the one in Boston so many of you guys would not be impressed with the Mystic Aquarium, but it's still fun. If you live in CT you can get half price passes from your town library for the Seaport and maybe the Aquarium but you have to call ahead to reserve them as they are popular.

If you are in that area you can also go to Fort Trumbull in New London and Fort Griswold in Groton. All very close, you can do the sub museum/Nautilus, Ft. Trumbull and Ft. Griswold all in one day easily and for free.

The forts are free to walk around in, not sure if there is some sort of tour for a fee but there's not that much to see at either fort, just nice to see if you are in the area. Don't forget to go to Capt. Scott's for seafood dinner afterwards.

Yes, you can go up to the top and look out the window (it's a bit of a climb) but only certain times and I'm not sure if there is a fee (I went for free with a church group) so call ahead if you want to go in there or if you want to go into the small museum behind it (there are some cool artifacts in there).

Took in the Nautilus a few years ago, good tour. If I remember correctly, there were a couple Garands on board as part of the display.
The strangest thing was the two guys in line behind us were Russian.

Virginia class boat. Good chance I worked on one or both of the optronic masts (non-hull-penetrating periscope replacement) on it.

Second pic has a mast raised - doesn't look like a photonics AKA the Christmas tree trash can that never works.

However, if you did work on the mast that boat does have raised I'm pretty certain we know each other.

Yes we have a winner,

You are correct, I'm on the platform over the USS Nautilus on the forward entrance to the sub.

No charge free to the public. http://ussnautilus.org/

A LOT cleaner and interesting than the first time I was on her, when she came in for some repairs at EB and was still an active sub. We did the tour of the boat some years later when she was decommissioned and became a museum.

yes a better picture showing USCGA in background

[laugh] You can always tell the nuke subs, they come up river under diesel (never under nuke power . . . except once when I instructed them to do so so that I could troubleshoot their problem) guided by tug boats. Glad to see that we now provide security (hope the guns are loaded) as she makes way up river.

Any idea what sub?

They took the markings off the boats back when I was at EB (1971-1973) for security reasons. So it does make it tough. Don't know if the New London Day still publishes scheduled arrivals and departures like it did in the early 1970s.

Yes, the museums, forts and artifacts in that area are interesting to visit. We did so a few times during the 3 years we lived there.
