I need some .223 / 5.56 "match" ammo recommendations please... :)

W

wolf223

so I've seen that Black Hills, 55gr or 69gr shoots GREAT out of 1/9 twist barrels between 16" and 24"

Savage 10FP in .223, 1:9 twist, 24" barrel: best groups EVER were accomplished using 55gr (believe it or not)

AR 15's in .223 / 5.56, 1:9 twist, 16" to 20" barrels: grouped about the same, but only using black hills 55gr or 69gr

*dilema*

I have a White Oak Upper on order, 1:7 twist, "service rifle" upper, 20" barrel....

*problem*

can't find any black hills, nor have I seen any in the local area, but have some options / recommendations / interest in:

1. 223 Prvi Partizan 75gr. BTHP
2. 223 Hornady 75gr Match BTHP
3. 223 Federal Gold Medal 69gr. Match Ammo

also, I have Privi 62gr, PMC 55gr and a few Federal XM 193 55gr kicking around.... so rest assure i will try those [smile]

just trying to get a feeler what one would shoot between 100 and 300 yards with a white oak upper....

that is all.

PS: i don't reload, will be using iron sights (A2 service style upper) and NOT shooting in any competitions... but would like to post some good target porn to feel good about myself. [laugh]

At 100 yds I dont think it is going to matter much, at 200-300 yds I would use either 69/75 or 77 g heads.
I know of a vendor that sells all of these (not sure if they ship to MA or not), if interested PM me and I can send you the name. The have their own 'brand' as well as other commercial stuff mostly for competitions.

my vote is 223 Prvi Partizan 75gr. BTHP ...basically the cheapest good quality match ammo I have seen...going for about 10 bucks per box of 20 right now at a particular vendor that BossHarley likely hooked you up with. I just got some for my Sig556

what do you need match ammo for? competition or just plinking fun? if you want to win a competition get the Hornady ammo they are very accurate out to longer ranges. i have tried a box in the past 75-77gr i dont remember with but they were like 24.00 a box of 20 rounds . i wouldnt buy them for plinking target shooting you can stick with the PPU ammo ist very good for the price ,actually i keep 4 of my 30 rd mags filled with 55gr FMJBT bullets cuz my gun seems to do good with those bullets.

i understand, just would like to "test" it with different ammo to see what is more accurate.... -for entertainment... [laugh] bench, prone, off-hand...

If you want to try some different ammo, why not ask/ set up an ammo swap? You can always try .223 hunting ammo also. HornadyBT and 3D CoyoteeSP 55gr both shoot real well. I have used Federal 69gr match, it shot very well. I don't think at 300 yards the 75..77gr will yeild better results. For hunting I use 52..65gr bullets. At 300 yards a Woodchucks head is pretty small (4"). My normal loads now are 55gr, but I found a great match w/ sierra 63gr varminter and IMR4064. Both 55 and 63gr are flat base. One of my Rifles is an A2. Very accurate w/ irons, but I also picked up a mount and scope for the carry handle for hunting.

I've shot the Prvi Patizan 75 grain 223 in my LWRC M6A2 and it is very accurate but my barrel has a 1/7 twist. I have used the Prvi Partizan 62grain 223 in my Rock River with a 1/9 twist and it was much better than the PMC 55grain 223. Your 1/9 might not like the 75grain stuff.

White Oak, white pine, hemlock or white birch...I don't shoot any of these...but I do know that Georgia Arms has a host of bullet weights and such for .223 Rem./5.56mm. Not being in MA, I don't know about all of the technicalities with shipping, etc. Just do a quick search for Georgia arms, it will be easily found.

I have a Bushmaster with a 1in7 barrel. When I first got it I tried almost every type of factory ammo I could find. I got the best accuracy with the Federal Gold Medal 69gr Match ammo. Good stuff, but I found it pricey.
