Police: Man Killed Teen Neighbor for Walking on Lawn

Tuesday , March 21, 2006

BATAVIA, Ohio — A man who neighbors say was devoted to his meticulously kept lawn was charged with murder in the shooting of a 15-year-old boy who apparently walked across his yard.

Charles Martin called 911 on Sunday afternoon, saying calmly: "I just killed a kid."

Police, who released the call's contents, said Martin also told the dispatcher: "I've been harassed by him and his parents for five years. Today just blew it up."

Larry Mugrage, whose family lived next door, was shot in the chest with a shotgun. The high school freshman was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Martin, 66, allegedly told police he had several times had problems with neighbors walking on his lawn. He remained jailed without bond Monday. His jailers said no attorney was listed for him.

Neighbors said Martin lived alone quietly, often sitting in front of his one-story home with its neat lawn, well-trimmed shrubbery and flag pole with U.S. and Navy flags flying.

Joanne Ritchie, 46, said Mugrage was known as "a good kid," but she always also considered Martin to be friendly.

Union Township is near Batavia, about 20 miles east of Cincinnati.

I guess the little punk didn't listen to the old man in the past. Mental note: Don't mess with old timey Navy dudes.

What a nut job...

But I had a friends dad that didn't like us on his lawn either.. And he would really freak out...

But he was werid, he would burn his lawn every year at the end of the year...

But damn if his lawn wasn't like carpet.

We had the opposite thing happen when I was a kid; one day the neighbors came over and mowed our lawn. Guess the grass was just too long for them.

Kid could have walked on my lawn all he wants. I lower the wheels on the mower as the weather gets hotter and dryer. When the kids were little they used to say "daddy, the grass hurts our feet". A brown lawn is a good lawn.
I hate lawn work. Weeds are good, they stay green all the time. I laugh at my neighbors trying to stay ahead of the leaves all fall long.

At some point we need to hear the rest of the story, to borrow a phrase. Usually there is some history.

I like your style! Mine looks like a rock farm after the construction we had done 5 years ago. Neighbor across the street (grouchy, senile old fool that once was an IRS agent) despises the fact that my "lawn" isn't green. He's 85 and spends all his time mowing and trimming (and blowing his crap across the street onto our sidewalk and "lawn"). They left a pile of dirt/rocks on the side of the house across from him and I've had thoughts of putting a sign on it "In Honor of Nate"! [smile] I don't plan on doing anything with the yard until he dies or moves (very unlikely)! Luckily he's a typical libtard and hates guns, so I'm safe . . . besides I never walk on his side of the street.
