So I got a big ol bag of rice. Already had a food saver (v2244). Fill the bag with rice, spilling it everywhere. Is this machine supposed to be able to seal mylar bags? Is there some trick to it?

No, the seal won’t be strong enough on that machine, I have one, but there are some hacks I used. First off, you need to do this, because you can’t suck the air out of non textured Mylar bags. Also, you probably want oxygen absorbers. Have a plan to use them quickly and reseal any your not using. Unless they’re already individually wrapped

After the machine seals, take a flat iron at about 350* and create a better seal across the top edge of the bag.

You can also use regular Foodsaver bags with oxygen absorbers, then throw them in Mylar bags, but this is wasting bags.

When you’re done, put the bags in some buckets with lids to keep the pests out.

From my reading, and personal experience, you dont need a vacuum sealer for mylar bags. What I did was fill the bag, drop in the oxygen absorber, remove as much air as I could, and seal with my wifes hair straightner. Once the oxygen absorber gets to work, it will remove the oxygen, and turn it into a solid brick.

I also recommend getting thick bags, imo makes it easier, and less chance of the mnylar breaking. Im happy with these, they also have ziploc seal for when yopu do open them:
