Get him one of theses, the new Para 1911 SSP!

My Dad’s done a lot for me over the years and it was time for some pay back. Guns aren’t new to us; however we’ve only taken up pistol shooting within the last few years. This morning we decided to get some range time in before the rain and I set him up! He was firing away with his S&W target .22 when I handed him a clip of .45’s. I told him he needed bigger bullets to hit the damn target! He looked puzzled and said he had nothing to shoot .45’s and that’s when I handed him the 1911. I wish you could have seen his smile. At first he was a little intimidated, but after the first 8 shots, all within a 4” group at 15 yards, he was a believer! Needless to say, the next 42 shots fired from his new beauty like silk. The guns awesome and Dad’s grinning like a school boy again! Family time is precious, I appreciate my time at the range more now than ever before.

The rest of the story...

The rest of the story goes something like this, so while at the gun shop picking out Dad’s new shooter, I had to have a look around. I needed a pistol since my collection is only long guns and revolvers. So I grabbed a Glock 22 for myself since I didn’t have enough cash for 2 1911’s. Anyway, I feel bad for Glock because our little test this morning didn’t make the Glock fare well. I mean seriously, the SSP 1911 is so smooth and accurate straight out of the box that the Glock sort of felt like a toy. Mind you with a bloody big bang! Anyway, I’ll learn to shoot the Glock I’m sure all the while giving old Dad the enjoyment of beating me until I do! Remember, our folks are only around for so many years, we lost Mum in 2004. Enjoy each day as if it were the last!

That's a really, really, nice sentiment. As a dad who has reached the age where my son can afford to buy me gifts, I know how happy and proud your dad must have felt.

Mrs. Wildweasel, it doesn't get all that much easier after 20 years either.

To lighten the mood a bit, here's something not to get him. A hunting trip with Dick Cheney! <G>

Hey, my 17 year old son bought me dinner tonight!
He doesn't care about shooting or guns but I'll take a free meal at the local diner.

Yes, enjoy the time you guys have together. I lost my Dad over 2 years ago, and it still is hard.
Mine's been gone for almost nine years now.....boy do I miss him. You never outgrow a Dad. Sellscottsell, you did good! [wink]

Sellscottsell....you brought a tear to my eye. I lost my dad 7 years ago. We never had the chance to go to the range for us to shoot together. That's the sweetest thing I've read in a long time. Your dad's raised a good kid. [wink]

It'll be 21 years next month since I said my last goodbye to my dad... Enjoy your time with your dad, Scott - may you have many, many more years and trips to the range with him! You are a seriously cool son to get your dad a .45 - and a Para, at that!

My dad was always so interested in my collection and had to check out a new gun whenever I brought one home. Despite his interest, he wouldn't go shooting with me. Hes been gone a little over a year now but thats one of those small things that resonates whenever I go shooting.

Enjoy your time with family and friends... its always far too short...

Sellscottsell, that was one smooth move on your part. Very cool.

I wish I could do something like that for my dad, but its tough since he doesn't do much.

I hear that...Now that my father is retired, his excitement for the day is forwarding joke emails to friends and listening to talk radio...ALL DAY LONG! At night he watches his shows that he taped the night before...not just one show...he usually has 3 or 4 VCRs recording different shows. During the spring, summer and fall, he can at least play with his lawn, but during the winter...he doesn't do anything and doesn't bother to take an interest in anything I enjoy either. I've tried to bring him to Mass Rifle with me a few times, but "nah, not today...I've got shit to do."...This whole thing goes way back though...A good family provider, but a father?...pfff. For those of you who have a relationship with your fathers where you enjoy the same things, other than nighttime CSI and 24 like shows, and best of all each other's company, I am very jealous.

I'm sure whatever you get your father will be the greatest gift in the world and very much appreciated.

Thank you everyone for all of your comments and virtual slaps on the back. I didn’t realize I would touch so many people. I only recently found this site and now I’m hooked. Much of the reason I bought Pop’s his .45 was because of what was being written about on these pages. Dad really wanted a 9mm since it was a bit more manageable in his mind. Since I had never shot a .45, I read up and learned that the 1911 was in fact “the” shooters pistol; so thanks to all of you for helping me. As for my being able to shoot with Dad and have a common interest in guns, I guess I’m just lucky. Who knows how my boy will feel towards the sport when he grows up; he’s only 6 now. My goal now is to wait a couple of years and get all of us on the range, three generations! What I do know, is I won’t be waiting until I’m 77 to get a 1911! Anyone want to trade their 1911 for my Glock 22? Don’t all step forward at once! Have a great day everyone.
