How do you mount a red dot sight on a Beretta 92FS?

What would be the best way to put a rail on top of a Beretta 92FS, I want to try a red dot sight for a while to see how it affects my practice.

Where do you think a RAIL is going to go on a pistol with an open slide?

For that matter, have you considered how the slide could possibly function with a large sight mounted on it?

What you need is an L-mount that attaches to the frame, either at the grip panel screws or by carefully drilled and tapped holes on the frame under the rails. Look at USPSA Open Division guns or Bianchi Cup guns for examples.

I suggest a fiber optic sight set as a far more cost-effective route, at least to start with.

Aimtech makes a no gunsmithing mount and B-square made one too but I cant find the B-square mount on there site.

I have the B-square model and it fits tight to the frame but you need a allen wrench to disassemble the firearm in the field. The Aimtech model looks like it does not have that flaw.

Something like a J Point might work, but would require a custom made mount since there's no special adapter available.

The sight alone is $264.00 at Brownells. Add in the cost of the adapter and custom work and it could get expensive.

There are similar sized red-dot sights (I think Tasco makes or made one).
I don't think the added weight would be a problem, however, if the scope is mounted directly to the slide, a cheap/inexpensive one might not hold up very well to the additional pounding and forces imparted by the slide cycling.

Buying a mount that replaces the grip panel is probably the lest expensive option (if you can find one for a 92-FS).

Is a 92FS accurate enough out of the box to even bother with an optical or laser sight?
I had two and neither were very impressive shooters. Very reliable and a fine
looking firearm, but not as acccurate as other pistols I have owned.

You would do it for a better sight picture. A frame mounted optic would be less ideal if the slide to frame fit is loose (production gun), best accuracy comes from mounting the optic on the slide, but then the optic gets beat up.

thanks for link..i've been wanting to add a rail to my 92D for sometime now..

though,i'm not sure how a light would look mounted to the top of the slide..

I am a much worse pistol shot than you are probably imagining, so I want something to help me get some biofeedback on where I am pointing.


A cheap $20 red laser dot on the trigger guard actually works great indoors to see where I am pointing, but outdoors in daylight it
is not very visible.
