is the plating actually thick enough in current pennies to remain intact once the zinc melts?? Its gotta be only microns thick.

Looks that way on some YouTube vids.

I suppose it would freak someone out if you drilled a couple tiny holes and melted out the zinc, leaving just a feather light hollow penny.

Not always. Souvenir smashed pennies are not illegal.

We used to put coins on the train tracks and collect the squashed ones after the train came through.

True, good point. Melting them down for the metals definitely not kosher tho so put them on train tracks before you melt them so nobody knows they are coins anymore!

Unless you have access to free fuel melting copper down for scrap is going to cost you.
2000' F is tough to keep up and maintain with out an efficient crucible.
